Root Virgin Mobile

People like to talk a lot of nonsense about the legality of flashing a phone from one carrier to another. That's a jurisdictional issue so it depends on applicable local and federal laws which you'd have to look up yourself. The more simple answer is that Virgin mobile doesn't flash phones to their service, so you'll have to buy a VM branded phone.

You could always try calling VM, I'd try to find a number that leads directly to a domestic engineering department within VM, and ask them.

I've tried flashing my Evo V to Verizon. They said not possible as it's illegal. That's why it's called Virgin Mobile. It will never be with another carrier. :D

Actually it may be possible. When I started tearing open every file for the stock and Sleipnir ROMs, I came across a file with a value in it that is a numerical value that pertains to the network that the device it is on. While I haven't tried it, nor will I specify which file it is, theoretically if you edit the numerical value to that matching another network (such as Verizon), you could theoretically end up on Verizon's network, with this phone. A PRL switch might be needed too, but I really have no idea. But, from what I can tell, it may be possible.

Either way it's illegal. And I know it's against the rules to discuss it. I was talking about my Evo V. :D I'm on these forums because I gave my Elite to my girlfriend and look out for updates to Sleipnir for her. And to help others as well :)

Didn't that new law that just passed give legal right to flash to the providers? If that's the case than it's up to whatever provider the phone came from.

Legality issues aside, there is software you can find that claims to be able to flash from one carrier to another. There are also companies that will charge to do it for you. An internet search will give you more information there.

Personally, I'd suggest finding a nice unlocked GSM phone and then you can pick whatever carrier you like with it.

I know but I don't have the money to buy another phone. I just bought this one February 2nd. :( And love the 3D features. Yeah, and I'm pretty sure that those programs are also illegal if used that way. I've looked it up. Everyone talks about CDMA workshop. There was a tutorial on how to get the OV to work on Verizon but that's only on how to get MMS and 3G working, said nothing on how to actually get it to Verizon and activated. I saw that you need a dummy phone from Verizon and then copy down some stuff, paste it to the new phone via a program, and then do the fixes for MMS and 3g but either way I think it's still a risk of it being illegal. I'm just gonna have to find time to talk to a Verizon representative.

Why the decision to switch carriers? From what Ive read the Evo does pretty well on VM. I agree on the questionable legality of any means of flashing short of having the carrier do it for you. I've heard stories of people getting their phones flashed over by surprisingly helpful engineers, but who knows what the reality of it is.

Maybe you could sell it or trade it on craigslist for another phone... Whatever you do I wish the best of luck. As I mentioned in another thread it's a shame to see so many people move on to bigger and better things. I just bought a SGSII when VM put it on sale for $230. I'm going to be keeping my Elite around though, it's a good little phone... I'm thinking of hooking it up with a Bluetooth OBDII and using it as a car gauge/GPS/media center

I live in an area now that doesn't get me ANY service at all on VM. But my Mom's iPhone 4 with it's shitty antenna gets 3-4 bars in the house. I don't get bars. I get No Service. xD I figured if I flashed to Verizon I wouldn't have to let go of this phone. Somebody on the Evo V forums directed me to a thread that is the only thread it is allowed to talk about how to flash a sprint phone to boost mobile and it worked for the Evo 4G but the Evo V 4G is totally different and on VM.
