Root Device can't find update

I received a notification of an update from T-Mobile this morning. I accepted it and the device appeared to download 15.4 mb of something. I was informed that the device would reboot and the update would take 10 minutes. I pressed "OK" and the reboot started.

I ended up at a "CWM Recovery Screen" with an error message and the update failed. I tried this a few times, and tried searching for the update file, without success.

My Blaze is rooted, running Android 4.0.4. I never installed a custom ROM, or at least I thought I never did. I'm not an expert on these things, but I thought CWM was a modified ROM. I think I'd know if I had installed it, but maybe not.

I don't know what this update is for, but I'm hoping it fixes the one-way audio problems I've had since the ICS update. So I'd like to get it. Any advice?

Hi Ubizmo. I moved your thread to the All Things Root forum for you. You can read more about the update at T-Mobile.

I don't have your exact phone but after reading a little here it won't update because you are rooted and most probably because you're using a custom recovery, CWM, instead of the stock recovery. Read this thread about using Odin to go back to stock.

The stock rom in that thread is probably old. If you check the firmware page at Sammobile.com, type in your phone's model number, you will see the latest that came out in Feb. T769UVMB1 You can download that one here. Here is another thread on the subject you can read through.
 
Thanks. I wasn't aware that the recovery ROM I used was non-stock. I don't know whether to roll back to stock or wait for someone on XDA to put the updated version up for download.

I never feel quite sure that I know what I'm doing, when I do these things. The only reason I root at all is to run SetCPU, which does a nice job conserving battery life. And it's nice to be able to use Titanium to freeze things and free up memory.

The recovery really isn't a rom. It's used to flash roms. :) If I were you I think I would wait a bit and see if someone posts a zip file for the update. You can just install that in your CWM recovery.

If not, using Odin is pretty easy. You would just need to download the file from sammobile and install it with Odin.

Yeah, Titanium is one of the biggest reasons I root. :)

Odin is all I've ever used. I don't even know what CWM recovery is.

But I think I'll do what you suggest and wait for someone to post the update, so I just have to do it once.

You're welcome, glad to help. If someone does post a zip just boot into recovery and select 'install zip from SD card'. At the next screen select 'choose zip'.

An easy way to get to recovery is to download Quick Boot from the play store and use it.

Very helpful. I got the app and tried it. So if someone posts the zip I just put it in the root directory of /mnt/sdcard/external_sd, where superuser is?
