[Verizon] New 4.2.2 Radios (Soon)!

Radios might help hold data connections in fringe areas, but it won't drastically improve strength. Bad hardware is bad hardware, no software is going to fix that.

I was thinking it might improve network handoffs. I live in a city, so the signal strength is generally fine, but occasionally it takes forever to acquire a signal when getting out of the subway or leaving an elevator. Kind of sucks if I want to make a call or look up when the next bus is coming, but my phone can't find a network.

Well, yeah, it could be meh, but I'm not planning on buying a new phone for at least a few months, so I'll take any new improvements I can get.

the 'improvements' have been available for a month, you should root. they're very buggy though on 4.2.2. hasn't been fixed yet by google.

I am rooted and running 4.2.2 rom, though it was my understanding that the signal handoff issues were related to the radio binaries, not any particular rom or kernel. If this is incorrect then I can see why no one else seems to care.

Would new radios improve wifi connections at all? Because I have that 4.2.2 issue where my wifi turns off after I turn the screen off so I'm stuck on 4.1.1 till that gets figured out..

Or is that more so in the framework?

then you're currently running all features that google is supposed to OTA soon to non rooted customers. :) google will probably come out with a 4.2.3 or something soon to fix all the issues with 4.2.2. check out xda and rootz, plenty of info on them

Besides, I've learned (from the Galaxy Nexus launch debacle and all subsequent updates) that the word "soon" coming from Verizon could mean anything from "5 minutes from now" to "right after the zombie apocalypse".

:p

Google has already pushed 4.2.2 to GSM phones.

this post is discussing VZW phones.

No the improvements to the RADIOS have not been available, they come from VZW not Google.

At this point new radios at best will probably only provide a incremental improvement (like hand-offs) but I'll take anything I can get.

I think Bluetooth and WiFi are rolled into the rom by Google, I'm not positive about that though :/

Correct. Bluetooth and wifi have their own binaries and code that are compiled and are part of the system partition. Radio files have their binaries and code that are part of the radio partition. So running a 4.2.2 rom doesn't run the extra code for the radios that comes from Verizon and is not part of the System(AOSP).

uh ok...

I've been noticing worse performance with these radios than with the 4.1.1 radios. I am strongly considering flashing back to them.

Maybe they made the radios worse to force us to buy new phones this year - hopefully subsidized so we break our unlimited data  ;)

Not to worry, Big Red: I will be buying a new phone... but it'll be FULL RETAIL and I'm keeping my unlimited data, thank you!
