Root Don't Use ROM Manager!!! Everything is here

I wanted to put this thread together because over the year I've owned this phone and been on this forum I've seen countless people soft brick their phones using ROM Manager.

THERE IS NO NEED TO USE ROM MANAGER FOR ANY REASON FOR OUR PHONE!!! EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR ROOTING AND FLASHING ROMS IS AVAILABLE HERE @ androidforums.com

Though there is already a list of everything you need in the All Things Root Guide here http://androidforums.com/spectrum-all-things-root/481809-lg-spectrum-all-things-root-guide.html I wanted to compile a shorter list of the basics for our noobs here so hopefully they will see this thread and not brick their phone with ROM Manager.

*This is not an attack on Rom manager, I'm sure it's a great program, my point here is it's not needed for the LG Spectrum in any way*

As of the date this thread was made there are many great Roms and a couple kernels for the Spectrum so just search the Forums and you will find them. The latest and greatest are AOKP 4.2 and CM10.1 based off Jelly Bean 4.2.2

*NOTE* this is meant for phones on ICS ZV7 and above and not a guide for those still in the stone ages on Gingerbread. I really hope this helps a few people and saves us on the forum sometime trying to help noobs from unbricking their phone because of ROM Manager.
 
I guess I shouldn't have posted so many questions in that particular forum. I'm sorry, I'm very new here and I don't want to get off on the wrong foot. But I got the OTA to zv8. Do you know if I'll have issues?
 
Not to be turd, but with rom manager you can access clockwork mod via rom toolbox, to do backups and schedule zip installs...

well finndo you are a more advanced user and know what you are doing. This was meant more for those who misuse rom manager and repeatedly come on here with bricked phones. You've been here the past year and think of how many times you've seen "please help, I think I bricked my phone, I rooted and then used rom manager to etc. etc." Rom manager is almost always in there when someone comes with a bricked phone.

I like I said, I'm sure rom manager is a great program, and has many uses. But I've managed to get by without ever needing it, and for noobs to rooting and how things actually work it's just to dangerous for them to mess around with rom manager.

PS. Don't think I mean noob in a degrading way. We are all noobs at something in this world, normally we are noobs at many things. I almost bricked my phone a few times with Rom manager when I first got a smartphone and got into rooting. I went into the roms list and thought that those roms were for any phone and attempted to flash them. I did some really stupid things because I didn't know better and hadn't taken the time to do proper research. I'm just trying to help people from making the same mistakes I did.

True, but you can reboot into recovery and do the same, except for stacking installs. Frankly, it's only good for flashing the newest version of cwm.
 
tsk tsk, ROM Manager is fine to use and I highly recommend it, esp for n00bs, and esp if still on GB. On ICS there are a few tricks and this section is a great source of information and instructions.

RM not needed, eh a bit strong and sounds a bit bias. Only time I seen ROM Manager brick anything was due to user error and/or flashing stuff not meant for the intended device. ;)

All personal preference and all in what you are installing and willing to learn. ;)

Play man, you missed the point of me posting this thread. The fact is many many people have soft bricked their spectrums with rom manager and have come here asking for help. If it had only happened once or twice I would never have thought to make this thread. But it's literally probably been about 2 dozens or more times I've seen it. it seemed like an everyday thing last spring.

I'm not being bias against rom manager, I like clockworkmod products. I even switched over to their new superuser app. But it is a fact that it's not needed. I've never once needed it for anything. I've downloaded it a few times and checked it out and for me personally I couldn't find one single thing it does that really adds value to my smartphone experience.

I'm not trying to turn this thread into a debate for or against rom manager. I was just trying to help keep some people from bricking their phones. So my position stands. If someone needs to root, install CWM, do backups, and flash roms, it's all here on the forums, and if the guides are followed, then there is no danger in bricking your phone. I've still yet to ever even soft brick my spectrum. It's a pretty difficult phone to brick IMO, but don't tell that to Mr. Rom Manager, He thinks otherwise ;]
 
I used to use ROM Manager all the time, but stopped after I got my spectrum. If you use Rom Toolbox you'll discover that clockwork is only accessible while the OS is running of you have Rom Manager installed. Per design of course.

like I said, I never had ROM Manager brick shyt, just users flashing the wrong things with it. I have seen just as many brick their devices using the other methods others and myself provide. ;)

But I will recommend a n00b use RM to install cwm any day than fighting with explaining adb etc etc. ;)

RTB is a great product too. ;)
 
I know RM had the CWM for our phone in the GB days, but I don't think it has the ICS one... does it? That seems to be the source for Spectrums bricked by RM - flashing the CWM it lists for the LG Spectrum (which is the GB one). Please correct me if thats wrong...

actually, most of the problems I've seen happened last spring and summer well before ICS was released.
 
imo rom manager looks like a deceptively simple app where many just end up skipping on learning whats actually going on with the phone.

I think thats where the problems come in. The fact it has an app looking interface makes it look "safe" to an extent.

meanwhile cwm looks like serious. Ive always told my friends to figure out cwm first.
 
I'm a impartial person... I'm not for or against rm, but when had it, I found I only used it to reboot into recovery. Since you can do that with cm and with the 'rebooter' shortcut in rtb, I simply didn't need rm anymore. It's all subjective and based on how you use the apps.

official CWM for the spectrum is 6.0.1.1, so its built off the ics or jellybean branch. ;)

That would be why I never used it once I moved to the Spectrum as well. Although it would be nice to be able to manage the backup and flashing system from RTB, so I have considered it several times.

Yea and until we had an official cwm, having it meant there was a chance you'd forget and flash the latest cwm and brick yo phone. It was really useful on the older droids, because you had to a flash specific versions of cwm to get recovery to work, but I don't find there's a need on the spec.

Could you elaborate on this statement? I find it difficult to understand. I have both and am trying to decide which one to give up. I love RM for making backups, restoring and managing same. There are less finger presses involved. RTB just removed its ad blocking feature to be able to remain in Play Store but I was already using AdAway also removed from PS but is now switched to F-Droid an open PS replacement. CM 10 replaced the overclock feature but I was already using CPU manager, etc. So I'm on the fence and find I don't use RTB very much.

well only way to flashed cwm thru rm is with a official cwm with rm support, before that if RM was being used you were flashing the wrong recovery and was at fault because the spectrum wasnt listed. ;)
 
Thanks for all the great info! I used the root/unlock boot loader/install CWM recovery method, and flashed CyanogenMod 10.1 to my LG Spectrum. Fantastic!! Now my question is about possible future OTA updates and how to block them. I checked my Titanium Backup for the SDM 1.0 file to freeze it, but can't find it. Did any of this process get rid of it as a precaution with the unlocked boot loader, or am I somehow just missing it? Thanks!

Ota updates only exist on stock based ROMs. CM is not stock based. In fact it uses it's own updater.

Thanks! Read a piece on unlocked boot loaders and OTAs that had me concerned. Glad the development work is including the Spectrum now. The phone initially got such a bad rap, its good to see people are giving it a second look!
 
One final (?) question...for now. Not finding USB debugging control anywhere. Is it not necessary with the unlocked boot loader?
