Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] Where to go from here?

11jjonn

Newbie
Purchased a used SG3 / don't plan on selling = no warranty / configuration issues.
Originally, ICS / performed automatic root / downloaded a few gaaps.
Updated (OTA) to 4.1.2 = lost root & gaaps. (presently, Stock ROM)
Loaded CWM 6.0.1.5, via Odin = CWM recovery (no longer Stock Recovery)
Rooted SuperSU-v0.96+.zip, via CWM recovery. (Status= Modified, no OTA available)
Not concerned with future OTA, as long as forum is source for Odin/.tar - Recovery/.zip.
(Have .tar files to Return to Stock, if necessary)
Installed: ES File Explorer, goomanager, Quick Boot (performed backup), Root Explorer, SuperSU, Superuser, Terminal Emulator, (performed "nvbackup"), Titanium Backup.
I think it's now safe to Play with this "Puppy" (don't think my Siamese will mind).
Willing to experiment, starting with cm10.1 (advice/guidance appreciated).
For starters: I'm a little confused about when to use Odin vs. CWM recovery .....
(also, when wipe/factory reset recommended)

why do you think because it says modified you wont get ota's? you got an ota before when you had root. so long as you dont mess with teh system files it will install just fine...

What were you doing with gaaps and touchwiz?

Gaaps is google apps. To be flashed with aosp roms like cm10.1. Touchwiz already have them.

Always make sure you have the right gapps. For example, you want to flash cm10.1, which is a 4.2.2 aosp rom. You will need 4.2.2 gapps. Flash in recovery after rom, wiping cache and dalvik before and after if you like. (i do)

Any flushable zip file you download is to be done in recovery. Any tar file is odin.

When I go to About device \ Software update: it says "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"

Gaaps such as Radar Now, Root Explorer, etc. Don't know anything about "touchwiz".
tx for tip on compatible gaaps -- and clarification on .tar/Odin -- .zip/Recovery (thought that to be the case, just needed confirmation).
Are the "nightlies" I'm reading about, in reality, Sounding Boards for the devs to help them fine tune their work?
Dangit -- Rhapsody just popped up on my Home Screen again ! ! ! (Trashed it) Wonder if this is going to be a persistent pest.
