Okay I did it, sent myself an email but it only gives me the option to reply and archive directly from the notification.

Go settings and choose to always delete. 4th option down. This will put messages in the trash if you are in a label and swipe the message away. Secondarily, when you get a single new message, the option to delete or reply will appear. If its not there you either have more than 1 new email or you need to do a two finger swipe on the notification to make the buttons appear.

When you say new email, does that include unread mail?
 
Jmar : you need to remove those screen shots amigo. Unless you want your Gmail account flooded w/ Spam. :)

Added : words to live by folks...never show your email in open forum.
