Root In need of some guidance...

I posted a thread before this one asking for some suggestions as to why the 4g no longer works on my phone. I was told to reflash the wiimax radio and try out a different kernel but I still couldn't get it back up. I'm using Unlocked potential and will be trying out cm10.1 to see if I can get 4g back. The last time I did have it was when I flashed Mobsters V4 and it just worked without me tinkering with anything. I'd like to really get to the bottom of this issue, so any guidance is really appreciated!

When my 4g option was greyed out after flashing my radio to many times. What i did to fix it was clear my cache+davlik and reboot.. and 4g worked again

Moved to ATR, I mentioned in the other thread that numerous people have been reporting issues with Sprints network related to the Network Vision upgrades, Unlocked Potential HD is working perfectly fine for me, as has been asked already please give us more information on exactly what you've done with the phone as well as the particulars of your current configuration.

http://i.imgur.com/liwgKF5.png This is some of the basics. In the bootloader I used to have 1.04 but I went ahead and tried to do the "joe" zip but that failed, it did install a new juopunut bear hboot, 1.50.5050 though. I tried cm10.1 and I still didn't get 4g so I went into recovery and I'm back on U-potential...
The radio is the 0530 one btw. Only you guys have the ability to get this thing working, I'm going to flash a V4 recovery and see if I can get 4g again with that rom...

Please download this firmware package (md5sum) and place it in the same folder where you keep fastboot and adb.

From your HBOOT (bootloader), please execute the following commands:
[high]fastboot erase cache[/high]
[high]fastboot oem rebootRUU[/high]
[high]fastboot flash zip shooter_ota_1.14.652.5_1.50.5050jb.zip[/high]
[high]fastboot reboot-bootloader[/high]

You should see the new radio (1.09.00.0108) after flashing that file. If not, repeat the above steps one more time.

Once you have had success, go into the recovery from the bootloader, and wipe your cache partition. Reboot you ROM. If you are running a stock-based ROM, "update profile" with Virgin Mobile.

Ok I dl the file, put it on my sdk-tools folder, that's where adb is.. I plugged in my phone and I'm in bootloader, when you say "From your HBOOT (bootloader) am I supposed to enter commands from my pc with adb? or are these cmd prompts? I just need some clarification... (BTW I think I posted this but I guess it's not showing, I did get 4G back yesterday when I flashed Mobsters V4 rom, all I did was flash that really old recovery I had backed up and it worked but I went back to unlocked potential and the 4g isnt working again, so that was interesting..) I want to try what you're telling me but I think I need to reinstal the android skd since I can't open any cmd prompts-they close down immediately... Regardless, what do you think about me getting 4g back via a simple rom flash, what can I do to see what's making it work?

These commands are fastboot commands, which like adb, is a program that allows you to interface with your phone from the computer. The difference with fastboot is that it's designed for low-level communications (firmware, specifically).

You need to reboot your phone to the bootloader to use fastboot commands. The bootloader is the "white screen" with text on it.

I think that if you're having to install an old ROM to get it working properly, then something has gone awry. Updating your profile with Virgin Mobile on your new ROM *may* help.

You do not need the whole Android SDK, you just need the SDK Tools. You cannot open these directly by double-clicking on them. Press the WINDOWS KEY+R on your keyboard, and type in "cmd". Once your command prompt is open, you can type [high]cd C:\sdk-tools[/high] to go into the folder with adb and fastboot. From there, you can issue the commands I gave you above. Of course if adb and fastboot are in a different folder, you will have to "cd" (change directory) to the correct location.

Your reply really made it great, so I followed all your steps and they were just flawless, unfortunately, the 4g still didnt turn on. WTF right? So what do you think we can do now?

That's odd... Have you updated your profile with Virgin Mobile?

One more thing, what ROM are you using?

I'm going to ask mobs for his opinion regarding this...So yeah I'm using Unlocked potential HD. Hey I'm currently looking for that "update profile" but I can't find it and I'm surprised I'm going through all the settings and I cannot find it! I have to ask where that is... Btw thanks for helping me you're ******* awesome! You've taught quite a few tricks just from your 2 comments. Let's see if I can figure this out though I really do want to get to the bottom of this...

Unfortunately the update profile has to be run from a stock-based ROM, like Harmonia or Negalite.

So to do that, you'd have to make a nandroid backup (backup | restore) in 4EXT, then format everything (except sd card), install the stock-based ROM, reboot, and it's in "System Updates" I believe, under the Settings menu.

Once you've got it done, wait for it to say it's updated your profile and wait for about 5-10 minutes after that. Then go back into recovery, wipe everything except sd card, and restore the backup... the whole process should take about 20 or 30 minutes.

Alright I'm going to try that out right now.. So once I do the "update profile" what exactly is that doing and flashing back the recovery won't interfere with the "updated profile"...

My best guess is that updating your profile tells Virgin Mobile what radio you are using so that your phone can communicate with its towers properly. All I know is that doing "update profile" after changing radios has saved me some hassle before.

Just to be clear, you're not flashing recovery again... you're just restoring your backup from 4ext (the recovery)... probably just a confusion with terms, but I want to be clear.

Yeah I used the wrong terms, I meant the recovery, yeah I got it no prob, I'm doing this as I type.
Edit: Ok so 4g is working with harmonia as is, I didn't do anything. So I'm going to do the profile update and then I'm go to do another clean flash of unlocked potential, if it works then **** yes, if not then I'll either go back to my recovery I just did or stick with harmonia. The only reason I even stick with unlocked potential is for the ability to listen to videos (youtube) with the screen turned of. I have difficulty falling asleep so asmr videos really help me out and this ability alone is really ******* cool. Unlocked potential in my opinion has the best of everything that was in stock with so many other great features like google now. It's ******* perfect except for the 4g. If this new flash doesn't work then I'm sure it's the kernel then..

Double or triple edit? The 4g is not working on the latest unlocked potential flash, this means going back to my last recovery is pointless.. I might as well stick with it now..

Mobs said----->

Open command prompt (cmd) from your adb/fastboot folder by holding shift, right-clicking, then selecting open command prompt here.

Put the boot.img into the same folder, then in the cmd enter "fastboot", then "fastboot flash boot boot.img"

BUT he never guided me on where to get the kernel or this "boot.img file"

This is where he had it, http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/580139-kernel-power-kernel-mobstergunz.html

I'm going to donate once I figure it out now.. I cannot let this take the best of me, **** you 4g I will get you working...
