I've got a stupid little icon with the rear of a car and some squiggly lines behind it. I guess I'm supposed to push that just at the right moment?
How about an app on your phone that works with your hands-free system? Say "traction control on" to turn it on ... say, "crash into a tree" to turn it off.
(And that, Virginia, is how you steer a thread back on topic.)

The weird thing is, when I push the button on my dash, all the trip computer stuff is replaced with a big yellow warning light with the 3 letter acronym. Seems to be saying: you sure you want this ON?
Unless it's saying, you sure you want this OFF ..?
Can't be: that would mean what I had in the snow last time was good ..
I really must RTFM ..

Counter-intuitive ... just for s&g I checked the manual and you have to push the button to turn it off. Sooo, button in is off, button out is on. Always wondered what happened to those engineers Steve Jobs fired. I always thought they were the ones who invented turkey bacon.

They were all guys. That was refusing to ask directions.
the traction control feature is always ON.
when you push the button.. it reduces the control of it a little.
when you hold it down for a few secs.. it turns it completely off.
the warning goes on.. when you push the button.. to warn you that you that you have reduced its help.
i forget what the letters mean.. but it is english.

Actually she was wrong, and BMW proved it back in the 1970s, before there were anti-lock brakes and traction control. Today RWD is even better than when BMW conducted its tests.
Want more proof? Notice how every big rig on the road is RWD. They get by just fine under all sorts of conditions. All it takes is a little skill. Of course everyone should have the skills to drive before going out on the road.

That "idiot light" indicates that your car's traction and/or stability control is intervening. You don't have to do anything. The main reason why there's a light at all is so you know it's still there. (Maybe also a reminder that you're on treacherous ground and to not try anything stupid.) Most of the time it's so smooth that you can't feel it working.
Some traction control/ESC systems allow the driver to partially disengage the protections. When you do that, the light will remain on until normal operation is selected.

I was actually talking about the icon being on the button to disable it, not the light on the console. But, yeah, like that.

The only warning light for traction control I got is a rather large 'TRAC-OFF' that thankfully only comes on during engine start to tell me it is there. The system is spoiling me though..I think if it malfunctions it shows that light plus the little tires on the car's Master Situation Display glow orange, too..

I have the electronic traction control turned off by default on my Mustang, and used to trust my right foot to do it for me. It has a green icon with the image of a spinning tire when I light up the rear wheels. :laugh: But after getting a truck with all sorts of traction and stability controls, it's grown on me. I'll be driving in the snow and notice the light flickering from time to time, and feel stable and secure. No drama; I like that!
IIRC the reason you can disable it is if you get stuck in a snowbank, the traction control gets confused and doesn't spin either wheel. The override takes care of this.

Yes...a snow bank...that's the ticket! I wouldn't dream of turning the traction control off for gratuitous tire smoke...

I have been known to participate in the local autocross club from time to time, which traction control doesn't play nice with.

Oh yes! A friend of mine with a Mustang similar to mine killed his lap times and destroyed his rear brakes when he forgot to turn off the traction control before a race. The things were glowing bright red in daylight! That's why I program my ECU to keep it off by default.

Just sayin . . . we should not let a dedicated section of the forum go to waste because the mods work so very hard each section. After all the mods spend so much time moving threads around and such.
