How many are trouble free?

I've been trying for almost 3 weeks to decide what tablet to buy with a birthday gift and think I've finally narrowed it down to the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Tab 2. The only thing that stops me from getting the Nexus 7 is the seemingly higher incidence of hardware problems, bum batteries and detaching screens mostly, combined with seemingly less than optimal customer service from Google. Since I guess that probably more people write to customer review pages and forums when they are having problems than when everything is going well, here's my question:

Can anyone offer an insight into realistically what percent of the Nexus 7's sold actually have problems? And, if one does, is it usually a big problem to get Google to fix it within a reasonable length of time?

Thanks. I've learned so much from reading this forum!

My guess is that only Google has this statistic. And they will probably not volunteer the data.

My 32GB Nexus 7 has never had any problems, but I am only 1 pion in the statistcs.

Well that makes two of us. It's a start... ;-)

To the OP, remember that most forum activity comes from people with problems and not those who haven't, so it's not realistic to expect it to mirror reality. Most users buy a Nexus 7 and use it without issue - and you'll never hear from this silent majority, only from a vocal minority.

Hold out till google I/o in may if you aren't in a hurry.

There should be at least a few more nexus tablet options announced then

Only issue I had was my own fault for letting the battery die. If you let that happen, it can be a real pain to get going again.

Well, that all sounds pretty good. I notice Newegg is now selling it for the same $199 as Google Play Store. My thinking is that, with free shipping and perhaps no sales tax plus that I suppose if it came with anything noticebly wrong I could send it back to them for replacement, that that would be a better deal than buying it direct from Google.

Does that make sense?

Here's a recent post by me:

I wanted to post this message because I found that there are thousands like me with a broken Nexus 7.

I bought my first Android device, Nexus 7 Tablet, a couple of months ago. First off, I love it and I'm very happy with its performance and use. I have the 32 GB 3G tablet. It has been the most user friendly device that I have ever owned.

After only two weeks, I dropped it and cracked the screen. I had a heavy plastic sleeve around it, plus it was inside a padded canvas bag. Yes, it fell straight down on its' side on concrete. In my experience, and thousands like me, the so called Gorilla Glass isn't so tuff. IF THIS IS FOR A CHILD, BUY THE DAMAGE INSURANCE!!!

The short story is I contacted Goggle, who I purchased it from, and they said 'not our problem', call ASUS. I called them and they repaired the unit for $150 plus shipping. I got it back and all is well.

There is a good ending to the story though. A friend suggested that I contact my credit card provider (Mastercard) about a possible reimbursement. I did, and while it took some time and a good bit of paperwork to satisfy them, I received a $150 check a few weeks after receiving the table back from ASUS.

So if you drop yours, give them call and you may be surprised how nice they were about it.

But are other tablets really any tougher? And does anyone have an opinion about buying it from Newegg and saving the shipping and maybe sales tax?

Mine had very slight screen separation on the left side when I bought it. It never got worse, though, and everything else has been perfect. It's fast and has great battery life. Highly recommended.

I love mine. No problems, great battery life. I don't use Bluetooth though and I see some folks are having problems with it. Should be fixed with next update.

+1 for no problems. The new dock is nice, too. Well worth the $$$.

Invest in a nice case ans screen protector for it and you'll be good to go.

I love mine, but must admit my first one was replaced with a lifted screen. The second one wasn't perfect when it arrived but seems to have settled out somehow.

I love the N7 but in hindsight although I wouldn't necessarily want a 10 inch tablet one in the 8 inch area would offer better screen size in my opinion.

Depending on your financial position and with regards to pricing on the N7 if I were in your shoes I'd go for one and then see whether one of the new ones this year catches your attention and do a trade of some sort.

One thing with forums...is that you'll rarely get an accurate picture of flawed vs flawless. Most of the time, you'll hear about issues people have, but for every person that complains, there's countless others that have never had a problem to speak of. So it'll be a hard picture to paint. But, lump me in with the others with an N7, that has had zero issues since day one. (ok, the only issue is that my old faithful micro charger for my phone isn't long enough to securely seat in the charging jack, so I actually had to use the cable that came with it. I know, horrible to think of.)

I don't have it loaded with a ton of stuff, just my AR Drone package, and random games. I don't have anything but a basic e-mail sync on it, no contacts or anything. Haven't even rooted it. For what I am using it for, I doubt it'll give me hassles operating, and I have a decent padded case, and generally am careful with it. Hopefully, accident-free for a while.

Not one problem, love it. Never got a case or screen protector either, not as fragile as you might hear, but I'm a careful guy... +1

I, also, have not had any trouble at all with my Nexus 7. But, I seem to not have problems with any electronics. I've had two smartphones (Huawei Ascend and Huawei Mercury) and two tablets (Nook Color and Nexus 7) and it seems what whatever woes afflict others skip me altogether. I'm just lucky I guess.

For the most part, trouble free. Maybe some backlight flickering (its really subtle, like you have to be in the dark at lowest brightness, you won't notice it in most cases). Maybe a few strange speed issues (not consistent, like its randomly slows down a few minutes or there is audio stutter for no particular reason). However, that may be just a software issue, after all, I'm running a CM nightly from early February right now.

The backlight one irritates me the most since its most likely hardware. And from what I've seen, its due to interference from the wireless antenna, so a sending it in most likely won't change a thing due to it being a design flaw. However, its not a deal breaker, and you may not even notice it, since its so subtle.

But other than a few gripes, its mostly pleasant. I use it far more than my laptop, that's for sure.

No issues here either. Luv this tablet, and I use it all the time.
I also bought a 2 yr accidental damage included extended warranty(0 deductible) for $59 just for peace of mind. :)
