Root Attention professionals

Ive had my phone rooted via the poot and ministro process for a few months now. And recently Ive been using Wifi Tether to get online at home. Running the tether for long periods of time puts the phones internal heat up into the 110-120's. So I started setting my phone on my window cill, cause its cold, and it keeps the phone in the high 80's, low 90's. Well yesterday I was in the dining room using tether and there wasnt a window nearby, so I did it without it. After around an hour or so, I went to my room. Sometime from the dining room to the kitchen, something happened to my phones connectivity/service/date, which one Im not quite sure. But as I got to my room, the phones hotspot wasnt nearly as fast as it used to be. So I immediately stopped tethering, and noticed my bars were as high as 1 or 2 (out of 6), sometimes not having any bars (but never getting an X next to them, indicating lost service). Getting really worried, I looked up quickly some other instances, but couldnt find anything relating specifically to my problem. Fortunately, after about an hour, my signal started reaching 4 and 5 bars, eventually reaching full connectivity again. But when I started sending texts I was having problems. They either never got to whom I was sending, or they would get them and there'd be a "0" between each letter, such as: Thanks for you help = T0h0a0n0k0s0 f0o0r0 y0o0u0r0 h0e0l0p0. This only happend once, but its never happened before, so I was worried futher.
So I started looking up how to return my phone to stock, and used the guide that had an easy and advanced process, the easy ones guide was a Noob something? Anyways, the easy process worked, and I returned my phone to stock. (Although I dont think it worked, cause was still rooted from when i pooted a few months back). Anyways, being the techy junkie I am, I tried installing custom ROMS. First I used Harmonia 2.03 ROM, which was okay. Except still, my phones texting and calling was sketchy. So I installed the ICS Elite ROM. This one I loved. But I couldnt get the poot/ministro rooting process to work and under the about phone, it said I was using a Virgin Mobile ROM, so i booted into CWM recovery and restored my phone to regular stock.

I have signal, and phonecalls are sketchy, but work both ways (as far as i know). But the texting is infuriating. I can send them some of the time (they always say sent), but I hardly get them back. And when I do, its all of them suddenly at once, for reasons beyond me. I can also use the data just fine. Im using facebook at the moment for my texting purposes.

I guess what Im asking, is if anyones got the know-how to tell me how to fix it, or to atleast recognize whats going on and point me in the right direction.

Thanks for you time reading the lengthy problem. If it doesnt relate to you, Im sorry for wasting your time. Thanks in advance!

Don't be discouraged if no one is answering to your issue. This doesn't sound like a common occurrence at all. I'm venturing to say that it may just be a sporadic network issue for sprint. The only thing I can really relate to as a similar problem is problem with texting. For example, the text cursor jumping back behind words I've already typed or things like (1/2),(2/2) being inserted randomly throughout my text. I think maybe sometimes, experimenting around with various different replacement keyboards and texting apps could potentially help.

Na, I have no issues typing out texts and sending them. I noticed when I place or recieve a call, that any texts I havent yet gotten flood in during the call. Something to do with the connection being interrupted. Would returning my phone to stock, and getting rid of root help?

If so. How do I unroot? Or will returning my phone to stock take care of rooting too?

My next guess is that it appears that you have the sprint version of the Elite, might you have flashed software meant for the Virgin mobile version?

Yes, I mentioned in the original post that the ICS Elite rom I installed was Virgin mobile based. But the texting issue was a problem before. Looks like Im in some deep do do. Im going to do this stock rom thing. Wish me luck!

Aside from Leslie's ROMs, the only other custom ROM that has a Sprint version is Sleipnir. They're completely different, so making sure you have either a universal (Aeneas/Harmonia) or carrier-specific ROM (Sleipnir Sprint) may help. I'm not sure about how it would directly affect signal and data, but there's a lot of important stuff in the build.prop file, and making sure the right kernel modules match the right kernel, is key to having everything functioning correctly.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is, after the unbricking method you applied, is to try going into CWM to Advanced -> Fix Permissions.

The phone isnt bricked. This method wont do any damage since its based on a bricked phone right?

That's correct. What it is is an Uber/Super Factory Reset. It will restore bricked phones, but it will also hard-reset them back to their out-of-the-box condition provided none of the non-main partitions were damaged (typically doesn't happen, very rare unless it's done intentionally).

Alright, I used the stock rom reset, everything worked great and went as said. Except my texting is still off. I can send them all day, and they get recieved (I texted my roommate, he got them instantaneously). But I dont RECIEVE them. And whats interesting, if I place a call, even to voice mail, all texts flood in the instant the call connects.

Also, I fixed permissions, but I believe it was when I was in the stock recovery. Would that matter?

Also, after doing the Uber reset, I reinstalled CWM via giantpunes noobinstaller. Worked flawlessly. Then ran the Sleipnir 2.0.8 ROM. Booted just fine, and everything works great.. beside the text messaging.

... 2... 0.... 8...?

o.o

Go ahead and try the newest version, v2.4.0.1. Plenty of bugs have been fixed since v2.0.8.

Thats the thing though, the text messaging issue was the initial problem. Ill go ahead and update the ROM while I wait for your next response. Thanks guys, everyone of you. Im sure this is more annoying that rewarding.

Did I fry something from using the tether for such a long time? That Uber reset should have fixed and replaced any malicious files/programs...

Sorry, when i copy & pasted the version it was off of the thread "all things root", the link was titled v 2.0.8 but the link took me to the updated versions thread

http://androidforums.com/elite-all-things-root/651121-rom-sleipnir-2-0-8-12-02-12-a.html

Dont bother going there, I just merely posted it for reference. This is crazy. Should I return it to Uber stock again, and try to get it replaced? Id rather not go through all that trouble...

Old links still work, but that thread does need some serious updating.

To be honest I'm not sure what exactly happened. Maybe it got too hot and melted the radio a little bit? Dunno. Have you tried a different text messaging app, such as Handcent or GO SMS? Anything works better than the stock messaging app. And yes, it should have.

EDIT: Also, try dialing ##786#, and enter your MSL, to refresh voice and data. Try that to see if that fixes anything also.

If this happens with the stock phone ROM, I would call Virgin and have them check it... doesn't sound like it is the phone.

UPDATE :
My roommate and I left town to visit friends/family. Around the time we got out of town I was able to send and receive texts properly. Still working like normal. I'm guessing it was simply the tower? We're headed home now, so ill find out soon enough. I can't thank you all enough, your feedback was encouraging, regardless of the results. Adtine, Ill download that text app, thank you!

Good luck. Also, remember SMS is not guaranteed delivery system and about 5% of messages sent are lost. Also, all carriers make them lower priority than voice calls.

So, if you want to send something important that MUST get there and you know it did... well, don't use SMS. ;)

Na its just that I pay $70 a month, and texting is a feature, so it should work. Ya know? And, Im home, low and behold the texting started acting up as soon as we got midway into town. Im going to Uber reset and call sprint

Really? 5 percent? Considering the way a lot of people text nowadays, that would be a pretty large amount of lost in cyber space texts. That makes for a lot of whiney groaning teenagers. Really I think you'd hear a lot more about it being a problem if that were the case.

I actually just found an app by accident in the Play Store that may remedy the lost text messages thing. It's called Ghost SMS.
