Root Format All and Clean Install

what would be the best method to backup everything, format the system AND data, then flash a ROM?

basically, i'm trying to free up space, and i want to start fresher than fresh.

i'm running PA3 right now, and i am planning to switch to CM10.1

and with the whole different users thing, legacy folders and all that, i want to start fresh.

i'm assuming i should do the following:

* boot into recovery
* make nandroid
* boot into android
* copy nandroid to computer
* copy ZIP file to tablet
* boot into recovery

then i'm lost here, if i wipe data, i lose my ZIP file.

but what if i do the following:

* wipe cache/factory reset
* wipe cache
* wipe dalvik
* format system
* flash ROM
* wipe data
* wipe cache
* wipe dalvik
* boot into Android

would that work?

PS- how do i find the nandroid files of CWM 6.0.2.3
ROM Manager says they're located in: /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkdmod/backup
but nothing shows in /mnt/shell

Backup your apps with titanium backup
make a nandroid
wipe dalvik cache, cache, factory reset, system
flash ROM
flash gapps if applicable
reboot
enjoy
(restore using titanium)

I'd also suggest using TWRP as your recovery instead of CWM

that is the normal steps i normally take when flashing a ROM in general.

i had done that already that just now, and i'm only seeing 8GB available with my 16GB unit. i coulda sworn it should be around 12GB free.

(and i tried TWRP for a while, i hated it. been using CWM since the Froyo days.)

PS-now i'm having a totally different issue. i had forgotten to transfer over gapps. and i can't boot into CWM anymore. it's not showing up as a selection in the Reboot options. and since i don't have gapps, i can't download ROM manager to boot into CWM... any ideas?

edit- n/m, figured it out, i made an APK backup of ROM Manager from my phone, and copied it to my tablet. was able to boot into CWM and flash gapps.

from there, i formatted data. but i still have only 8GB free. still need help on this one.

Souds like you are talking about the stuff on your internal card. If you wipe that you'll lose everything on it including backups, photos, roms, ect.

i figured it out. i just had to restart it and for some reason that recalculated the free space. now i'm with 12GB free again.

i kinda hate this whole 4.2.x file structure system. i feel like there's so many locations for things now.

like, i'm trying to restore a Nova Launcher backup, i put it in /Android/data/com.teslacoilsw.launcher/backup/ but when i try to restore, it says nothing is there.

the same went with CWM backups. i have no idea where everything should be stored.

Nova backups are typically store at /sdcard/0/data/com.teslacoilsw.launcher/backup/

Let me know if that helps. :)

this is where i'm confused.

so i'm using Astro File Manager. the default path of "My Files" is:

/storage/sdcard0/ (which shows the same files and folders i see when i connect it to my computer)

now if i go to /storage/, i'll see the following:

/storage/emulated/0/*
/storage/emulated/legacy/*
/storage/sdcard0/*
/storage/usbdisk/ (empty)

the 3 paths with the * all display the same files and folders.

then at the root level, there's /sdcard/ (no /0/ folder) which also displays the same files and folders.

and also at root /usbdisk/ (empty)

so all in all, there's 4 different paths that each displays the exact same stuff.

Due to having multi-user capability in 4.2.x, a number of alias's or shortcuts exist to facilitate potential multiple users. That is what you are seeing.

yea, and i hate the 4.2.x folder structure.

what used to be a simple drag backups to device thing no longer works.

-EDIT-
ended up ditching Astro File Manager for ES File Explorer.

i was able to locate the correct path for restoring my Nova backup, and also the path to the CWM nandroids.

sorry for the necro post but this is relevant
i know you already solved your problem. but for future reference, CWM recovery's and the rom manager APK are both available at the developers website .
google "clockwork mod rom manager" it should be the first result
