Root ruu for hboot 1.50.5050

I didn't have to flash the zip. I was specifically told that when you're s-off, you don't have to lock the bootloader. However, it won't really hurt anything if you relock it so it's probably just best to follow RamJet's instructions.

That's just to get out of box stock

I thought the RUU locks the bootloader for you if you're S-OFF.
No, for S-OFF users the RUU doesn't touch the bootloader locked/unlocked/relocked status or reset S-OFF to S-ON. JuopunutBear will reset the bootloader status to "locked", but many S-OFF users have unlocked their bootloaders after performing the wire trick not realizing that they can just use a custom hboot like JBear, Revolutionary or ENG instead.

Wait, So your saying theres other ways to get s-off than doing the wire trick? Just by installing a different hboot? Dont you need to be s-off to install a different hboot?

No, there's no other way to gain S-off. The wiretrick is the only way for hboot 1.57 and 1.58.

What ramjet73 was saying is that after you done the wire trick and get S-off, your unlock booloader would return to "locked" like it was before, but the controlbear will automatically install Jbear custom hboot 1.57 or Jbear 1.58.

So you won't see that the stock hboot is "locked" unless you flash one of the stock hboots.

There is another method to get S-OFF for Evo 3D users but I don't recommend that for the Evo V since it involves flashing a couple of Sprint GB RUU's that may cause issues for VM users. That hasn't been tested yet so if a VM user wants to risk their phone the developer (unknownforce) thinks there's a chance that it could work for VM users. Read this part of a related thread for more detail.

You are correct that you need to be S-OFF to install another hboot separately, but the RUU and OTA signed files can update the hboot to the latest stock version for S-ON users. It's not possible to get S-OFF by just flashing an hboot or we wouldn't need the other methods. ;)

I wish the S-off process could be make easy. It's not too complicated but a lot of people have issues with it either because they didn't read carefully before proceeding or they were just not paying attention: /

So after running the ruu on a vm evo, you'll be on 1.57, and if it was locked before you ran it, it stays locked and if you were unlocked it stays unlocked?

Yes

But I will add this, after you have done the wire trick and gotten S-off, your bootloader would be locked because the controlbear process would lock it and install the JBear hboot 1.57.

Added my reply to the XDA thread to give the layout of the EVO V 4G.

I just replied to that.

The reason your layout is different from what unknownforce posted is that his layout is for hboot 1.58 and your is for hboot 1.50.5050. It seems that every bootloader creates a different layout, which is why I recommend using the most current version that will work for the ROM's you flash.
