Root partition sd card for apps2sd - gparted or recovery?

ive read the how-to's but am a little confused still. i partitioned my DHD using EXT4 recovery, i didnt need gparted.
all the advice seems to point to having to use gparted on my wifes desire tho (shes getting low space warnings)

can i use clockworkmod alone? or do i need gparted? im running linux mint on laptop, and partitioned my HD this morning using the dvd iso, so have an idea what im doing, but just wondered if i could simply do it through the recovery alone?

also when reading the how-to's, it mentioned partitioning as FAT32, but shouldnt i be doing it as ext3? its an 8Gb card, so im thinking 1Gb second partition, and swap =0. that right?

bit of advice to help me sort this would be appreciated :-)

You can use 4Ext to partition your card no problems if that's what you meant. You can also use GParted if you prefer. Your card will already be FAT32 so what you are really doing is shrinking the existing FAT32 to grab 1GB that you then turn into ext3 or ext4, whichever your preferred rom requires. Yes swap should be 0

great thanks. my wifes got clockworkmod recovery tho, i assume then i cant do it with that? and if not, how do i change recovery?

When most of the advice here was written there was no 4Ext for the Desire. We would not recommend using ClockworkMod or Amon Ra for partitioning because they will usually leave you with misaligned partitions, reducing write speed on the card. 4Ext uses a better partitioning tool, and would be fine for the job (it can also detect and fix misaligned partitions). There's no problem with using 4Ext on your DHD to partition the card for your wife's phone.
 
If you want to change recovery, is her phone S-Off? If it is you can simply install the 4Ext Recovery Control app from the Play Store, or the free 4Ext Recovery Updater from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1408936. Either of these can install 4Ext Touch recovery for the Desire. That XDA thread also has direct download links for a recovery image you can fastboot flash (near end of first post).

Otherwise the best way to change recovery is to use Revolutionary to take the phone S-Off, then do the above. There's a guide to using Revolutionary in the Desire All Things Root Guide sticky post in this forum (red link in my signature) - you'd just have to follow the steps as far as flashing recovery, as the phone is already rooted.
 
should have thought of using my 4EXT with her card! simple really. just done it, so about to connect to pc and restore her nandroid for her to replace all her music and pics.

I hope you backed up the whole card rather than just the nandroid! The sd card is the one thing that the nandroid doesn't back up (ext partition and apps moved to sd, yes, but not media).

Sorry, I thought about including that reminder, but as you'd partitioned cards before and read the advice here I figured you knew, and hence it would be condescending to repeat that. Your last post has me worried now.

yep, i messed up :-) ive got her music backed up elsewhere tho so am currently restoring it. doh!! :-D

must be getting tired, cos when i connected her phone to pc, i wiped her previous nandroids, leaving the one ive just done. it didnt figure that that was only on the sd card itself, then i went and partitioned. so i dont have a nandroid!! :-D

at least i can take another when ive done this. just a quickie..... will i have to reinstal the rom for it to start saving to the partition now? or will it just work like that from the off?

What ROM is she using? Most ROMs that contain a2sd scripts will detect the partition and move stuff. Some will require terminal commands to initialise the script. CM7 will require you to flash the a2sd script in addition. There are a number of apps that can show whether the partition is being used. For a simple example, look at the overview page of Titanium Backup and see what it says about "a2sd storage". If it reports that you have about the right total and that a significant bit is being used, then you know it's working.

just had a look, she doesnt seem to have titanium, which is strange as thats usually one of the first things i put on there when i change roms. ah well, ill put it on tonight and look.

shes using mildwild.

I've had a look at the a2sd script on one of MildWild's ROMs and it should just detect the partition and use it automatically. If it doesn't seem to work, try rebooting the phone.

If that isn't enough, tell us which MildWild ROM it is and I'll check that out, but I reckon he'll have used the same script on them all.

just installed titanium and seems to be saying the right things. system rom 262Mb (163 free), internal 154Mb (114 free), SD 6.87b (3.36 free) and SD card (a2sd) 1.05Gb (919 free)

spose the proof of whether the rom is moving data to partition will be no more warnings of low space :-)

btw, its mildwild GB-1.
