are you asking how they work or what they're used for? The main thing the proximity sensor is used for is to put the screen to sleep when you bring it to your face to talk on the phone.

The math is simple.

Distance

Speed = distance / time

Acceleration = distance / time^2

An accelerometer gives a measured force value. Along with time, you can work backwards through those equations to get speed and distance moved, in a 3 dimensional space.
