Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

let's be real about one thing folks: the Incredie is not even close the device the EVO is and it has only one thing over the EVO, a faster release date so if you cannot wait under any circumstances, the Incredible is the perfect phone for you ( or the nexus one, or the HD2 and so on)

This is my first post on this forum. Like other I have been reading for a long time just have not posted. Well I went to RS to have a look at the HD2 last night and me and the sales guy started talking about phones, so I just kind of asked about the EVO he was like oh our sales rep was here and was talking about the EVO how great it going to be and all the features. SO I kind of slipped in so when does it come out, with out thinking he said next month, and the manager came running over like well well what he meant to say is it may come out in the next couple of months. Lets just say I left the store happy with a big smile.

Are you sure about this? I only ask because I remember discussion in the Incredible forum about Verizon signing Skype to an exclusive agreement. So....I was under the impression that the only people that would be able to use Skype on a mobile phone would be a Verizon customer. I don't completely understand the VOIP services as I have never used one...but assume Vonage or another provider could work...and that Sprint may have something in the works in this regard. Just a bit confused....

Edit: I also think using video chat or making a video phone call could be possible with the front facing camera....and think along the same lines that one of the VOIP providers would be the ticket. Having said this....I also wonder if about using something like Windows Live...which is indeed pretty much a video phone call when using a cam. Anyone care to splain this further...goat head!

Sorry for not being a little more clear. I didn't know about Skype's partnership with Verizon, but I was just referring to VOIP in general. You know like how if we are talking about a bandage people say Band Aid or if talking about a tissue people say Kleenex. As far as the camera that's what I was talking about. We would have to use some software to be able to do it but that's likely one of the main reasons that it has a front facing cam.

And better type of screen but the EVO being a bigger screen makes you forget about that. Yea our EVO screen will do better in the sun but who stands directly in the sun anyways lol . I think people could manage if the screen was AMOLED . Just turn the lighting up or set to auto . But anyways I agree POLKADOTS . That was a very dumb move for SKYPE . What does that sound like for somebody having to be a verizon customer to use skype . But remember we are android users and we have plenty of versions of almost every app . So I think there are ways around this . & I personally don't use skype anyways like that. But if carriers want to take over Messengers then Sprint should snatch up AIM or Yahoo or something . & do calls over that with the front facing cam . I'm sure developers will take full advantage of that . & just imagine what people will get it to do when and after it's out . The phone will feel new for a while . I'm keeping this baby until the two year contract is up . I want to hold this for each successor to it if they have chapters for this. Idc what they come with next. Cause slowly but surely each android phone was closer to what I wanted in a phone every way. All EVO is missing for my personal like is the physical keyboard but I an dig without it. Cause that Shapewriter app (just like swype) is a killer.

& HTC taking over Palm would be sweet . Yea Palm had a lot of bugs etc but with HTC they can smooth all that out and work magic . & imagine them making another sense to lay over that . but I don't think they would even need to . I would like to see Web OS as it is on a better device made from HTC . Oh and I think Sprint site is back and running. Most part it seems like it for me when I'm on it . The community forum part is anyways. But I like it here better .

i'm on Sprint Unlimited Everything for $99/month so i could care less about Google Voice or Skype etc. from a Voice Minutes perspective. however, i'm sure i will be able to cook up some cool tricks utilizing Google Voice - but i'm just not sure how yet. Google Voice is one of those things i'm glad i have now but i'm not sure how i will use it in the future - but i know i will somehow.

That is dumb. It doesn't seem like a smart move for Skype...Verizon, sure...but not Skype.

I have never used google voice (!) - could that be used in the same manner as Skype? Thanks.

Yes but not yet. Google bought Gizmo5 about 6 months but have not yet implemented it into Google Voice You can put your name on a list to get an invite like Google Voice. Users of Gizmo5 before Google bought it I believe can still use it. Would make sense to have it ready for the EVO.

I for one am kind of happy that no new info came out. Don't get me wrong, i want this thing just as bad as everyone else does. The smaller amount of people getting it for the "cool new thing" tech toy, the better chance the people who really want it will have it. I would much rather have someone who can start making custom roms get this than see it all over TV. That is just my 2 cents, worth nothing to anybody but me. Sorry.

Skype is much better for international calls much, much cheaper if you call a phone FREE if you call someone on Skype. Plus video calling is included. My son is a DJ and travels alot (He is in Dubai right now) so we talk or im thru Skype.

I have the SERO 500 min with 3 free (Fav 3?) so i made one of those my google voice #. I gave the GV # to a few people that I speak to once week at most for 20 mins or more. Also GV will send u a text with a transcript of your voicemail (even your sprint vm if u want). I'll be switching plans soon because of the EVO and won't be using GV at that point.

Yea I have the unlimited everything plan to and had it for a while now so I mean it's whatever to me personally. I'm not worried about anything .

Kuddos to Verizon for snagging Skype. You know they knew the Evo was on the way to the masses and had the front facing camera that could take full advantage of Skype. Just think, having a video call to some one while on a train or sitting in the park on a nice day. What a shame we don't get to use it but I'm sure there will be another dev that will see the obvious potential here and bless us with a great app that will rival the Skype thing.

Right and they need to just add the video call into the native yahoo and aim apps that come on the phone . I think this should be next in android phones . that would be nice .

I love not having to give out my real number :D.

Google owns Gizmo5 a rival VOIP company of Skype It does video calling. It is not open to new subscribers yet. Hopefully it will be for the EVO and Android in general

This is a thread about the EVO 4G right??? Not Skype, kate plus 8 and among other things being discussed that has nothing to do with the EVO...

Lets not start to get OT so that the poor admin doesn't have to go through and get rid of the OT posts like a few days ago he spent hours doing.

I do believe a ffc and skype have everything to do with the evo. As far as the Kate stuff, seems a little friendly conversation isn't a bad thing.

I can't remember where I read it....but I was reading about people traveling abroad and using services such as Vonage. There are actually a lot of companies that do this sort of thing....and some of them are higher rated than the better known companies. I don't have time to do a search now....but I think there are probably possibilities. With this said, I think Skype is one of the better ones...and with the new mobile app...quite attractive.

I agree....some other company can or will pick up the slack here....and before you know it you will be able to find a WiFi or WiMax spot in Europe, while having a drink....and call home. AND...you won't have to be on a GSM phone to do it! Now...adding a cam to this....awesome! I hope they make it functional...it would be sweet. And...while I'm wishing....I hope they make free services such as Windows Live Messenger...functional with that front cam as well! Kind of makes me wonder if the video chat will work in landscape mode...because I'm thinking that kick stand will come in mighty handy to prevent camera shake for video conferencing.
