Help note sync

Newbie
When I connect my note up to my pc win 7 with kies, I'm trying to free some space on the phone, it keeps asking me whether I want to sync. Now when it syncs what happens? Im trying to back up my stuff onto the pc and then delete a load of videos and photos from my phone so I'm unsure what "snyc" will do ?

On my blackberry I used to back the stuff up and then delete most of the phone stuff, this doesn't seem to be possible or clear with kies

thanks in advance

I'd like to delete some photo and videos off my galaxy note 1 , I go on kies and select the folders on my phone , it then warns me "this will also delete the photos from the device" !? WTF is going on ? where is kies looking ? where are these photos situated that it will be deleting ?

If I do delete them and "synch" , does this action replace the ones I've deleted from the pc or does it also delete them on my pc ?

The current version of Kies seems to be stable and I am not pestered by it to sync. I configured it to sync but on automatically - maybe that would help? I mainly use Sync for synchronising my Outlook calendar with S-Planner on the Note.

There is a back-up option in Kies as well. You could simply navigate the folders and move the files you don't want on your Note any more. Another alternative is to invest in a big MicroSD card - 32GB cards are now under

Peter, I merged your thread from the SGS2 here since it's about the Note.

To answer your question, the concept of sync'ing is simple. Kies assumes the last action you take is the one you want to be persistent across your devices. For example if you take a picture with your phone and you sync with Kies, it will copy it to your PC. If you then delete the picture from the PC (using Kies), it will assume you want the photo deleted everywhere so the next time you sync it will remove it from your phone.

If you create a contact in Kies, sync your phone and then delete the contact on the phone, it will be removed from Kies the next time you sync because that is the last thing you did with the contact.

This is correct, but don't forget you can choose which kinds of data you want to sync and not sync others - like calendars, audio files, photos, etc.

Thanks, I'm not much of a Kies user as there are so many better sync solutions out there for me. (Starts with a "G" ... ends with an "oogle" ;) )

thanks for the responses. So if I delete photos and videos on the note , then sync it will delete the photos and vids on the pc back up ?

I think sync and backup are separate. But if you are syncing then if you delete items that are synced on the note, they will be deleted on your PC. Could also be vice-versa, I can't remember if Kies offers the option but sometimes you can specify only syncing one way.

so in effect , your video and photo collection is limited to the size of your phones memory?

I've given kies a miss, its crap

Well, that's your opinion. Kies has improved a lot and I find it useful. No doubt some will think like you and others like me. You don't need to keep your entire media collection on your phone. You could of course add extra memory to your Note (which you can't on so many others any more).

The trend is to move more and more media to the cloud. I have my own media server so I really don't need to load up the internal memory of my devices, although if my connection is slow or intermittent it can get frustrating.
