[International / GSM] New to Rooting Phone, Nexus now stuck on Logo. Please Help!

Hello everyone. I'm going to give you guys some back-story on my problem. I decided to overclock my phone to give it a speed boost. I followed WUGS Rooting guide to root my phone. I then installed clockwork recovery mod. I used Franco Kernel #365 for Jelly 2.2 and followed the guide on how to install the kernel. After I installed the kernel my phone got stuck on the Google logo. I have tried going into recovery mode but anything I do there doesn't seem to help, also I have tried connecting it to my computer but it is not getting detected. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

Hey there,

Welcome to AF. Sorry to hear about your problem.

Gonna move this thread to the root forum to get more of the right eyes on this. I'm also going to request locking or deletion of the duplicate thread you posted in the lounge. That way all the answers and questions are in one place and in the right place.

I'll start by asking a question to get us started fixing this for ya:

Can you get into fastboot?

If you don't know how:

Disconnect the phone from your computer.

1) Remove battery
2) Replace battery
3) Power up by holding Power Button and both volume buttons at the same time.
4) This should bring you to fastboot. Big Android Andy with his front plate opened and some text in the bottom left corner with your device's specs.

If you get there let us know.

P.S. Which carrier are you on so I can put this thread in the proper root forum and ensure you get the properly named files to download later if needed?

Cool. Which carrier are you on sir? Calling in reinforcements to help. I don't know how to troubleshoot with Wugs.

Are you running stock or a custom rom? Also, when you try to boot into recovery mode, do you get the dead looking android with the "!" above it or standard cwm or twrp? For your computer to read the device, you have to be in fastboot mode, or have the device mounted while in custom recovery. This probably explains why it doesn't see it if it's plugged in while it's trying to boot.

Stock ROM is the original firmware that shipped with the device. Custom ROM is firmware that has been built by independent developers, not Google.

It sounds to me like you flashed a kernel that is not specific to your device type.

Example, you have a Yakju, and you flash a Toro kernel, bad move. Creates a bootloop, which is what you explained was happening in your first post.

Can Wug's toolkit be used to flash the Stock Kernel?

Alright, so it sounds like you're running the stock rom. So what probably needs to be done is to reflash the stock kernel. Since you unlikely have the zip file for it to flash in cwm, it will need to be flashed in fastboot manually.

So what is needed is to grab the factory image from Google and extract the kernel. You can grab it here : https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/yakju-jdq39-factory-b2ebb5f3.tgz. Once you have that downloaded, let me know.

I was thinking that I may have flashed a kernel that was not specific like you said. Wug's has an option to flash the stock kernel. It also specifically mentions bootlooping. Now I just need my computer to recognize my phone.

Okay Hawk that sounds like a good plan, I think I may be able to get the stock kernel straight from Wug's, but like I mentioned to JMartino my computer isn't detecting my phone. So I guess that's step 1?

Have you tried hooking up the phone to the computer while in fastboot mode? If so, open up the device manager and you should see one of two things. Either an unknown android device, or Android ADB bootloader interface. Which one shows up?

I am in FastBoot mode I believe (Android guy is on his back like you said, with product specs) but nothing is coming up on the device manager.

Wow, I could have sworn I tried a different port. But yes it is coming up in the Device manager now. Android Device- Google Galaxy Nexus Bootloader Interface. I can't believe I missed that, but o well. So now it is just simply loading the stock kernel?

Yep, that should be all that's necessary. Once you have the kernel ready, either wugs or yourself manually can flash it.

The beauty of these nexus devices is that as long as you can get into fastboot, it can be saved 99/100 times. If flashing the kernel fails, then flashing the factory image can be done, but that comes with a big penalty, completely wiping everything on the device. But at least it will work again.
