Root [Sprint/Cricket] Help! I tried rooting and I messed up bad.

Hello,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-L710 through CSPIRE WIRELESS. I have read online about "rooting" and it sounded pretty simple so I gave it a try. Stupid move on my part, I guess I'm not technologically advanced enough for this procedure.

Now my phone is frozen and appears to be stuck in "Odin Mode" and is trying to download something. I downloaded samsung galaxy s3 toolkit 7.0 and was in the process of installing drivers and the Odin program opened. After adjusting the Odin settings my phone was supposed to reboot and I could close ODIN. My phone never rebooted. I tried removing the battery and holding down the power button and nothing happened. I read online to hold down the Power + Up Volume + Home key, I tried and it flashes Samsung across the screen and nothing else. I tried holding the Power + Down Volume + Home key and it gives a warning to hit UP for custom OS or down for restart phone. If I hit down it flashes Samsung and stays powered down, if I hit Up it gives the following message at the top left: ODIN MODE (in red font), Product Name: SCH-L710, CUSOTM BINARY Download: Yes (2 counts), Current Binary (Custom), System Status (Official), Qualcomm Secureboot: Enable (in gray font) the android logo is in the middle of the screen and underneath it says "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!

If any of you android wizards have and solutions and can help me get my phone back to the way it was or just back working again, I would be forever grateful and I promise I will not try rooting again. Obviously I'm not the smartest person when it comes to this stuff so if you could explain it to like I'm an idiot, I'd appreciate it as well. Thanks in advance.

You arent an idiot lol and the phone is fixable so dont worry. So did you get to the stage where you flashed the rooting file to the phone using odin?
You should maybe make a post in one of the sub-forums at top of the page here that most suits the carrier model of s3 youre on because they all have their differences

That guide looks dodgy man but im on a different version of s3.
can i ask a Mod to move this thread to a forum where people with the same device will be able to help you better? The mod will PM a link to where its been moved to.
Good luck :)

You are in download mode, which is good.

When you are in download mode on your phone, does the com light up in Odin showing that the phone is connected? If so, jump to the next step here

First, you need to finish the root

I recommend using this for your specific model sgs3

Next, you may still not be able to boot your os, but not all is lost.

Download a rom onto your pc, I recommend cyanogen 10.1 or aokp

Here is a link to cyanogen, it's pretty much stable and running 4.2.2

I hope this helps, if you need a hand or have questions on customer recovery or anything, let me know

Cheers

I've not heard of your carrier but by doing a bit of google work I find that SPH-L710 is the Sprint version of the S3. It's not a SCH-L710 but it's my best guess. If you think this might be your phone... I'll move this thread into the Sprint root area for the S3

Funky logik - that would be very helpful thanks.

theonesalmon - I closed Odin on my PC but after the com light changed and it appeared to have downloaded the files since my phone did powered down just didn't power back on. Odin3 v3.07 opened up on it's own through the toolkit program after I selected the options that I was instructed. I'm not sure how to get Odin to open back up. I tried repeating my steps through the toolkit and it wants me to make sure the USB debugging is enabled, but I can't access my Settings so it won't go any further.

The first link you sent me for my specific model is for SPH-L710, but my phone model is SCH-L710, will it still work? Also the other link for cyanogen you said it runs 4.2.2, while my phone is 4.1.2, so will that work as well? I really appreciate your time.

Theyre probably the same model, the code is so similar. In the Sprint forum im sure theyl know.
Good luck with getting the phone working again mate :vroam:

I'm of the same mind as funkylogik. I'll move your thread over there and see if those guys can help you out. They will let you know if it's in the wrong place. I'll send you a pm and a link to it's moved area. If you find it's not in the right place... pm me back and we'll go from there. Best of luck to you and thanks for using these forums.

My bad sorry, typo.
You always want to make sure that you only use root kits and roms made for your specific model. Bricks can occur otherwise.

As for Odin, you can just download it if you can't find the copy you had initially used.

I would recommend you follow a guide from xda, they seem to be the best.

You'll get your phone back, just have to do a lot of reading and researching.
Good luck!

ive never heard of your carrier or your model number but id suggest taking it up to your carriers store and see if theyll fix it. if not id try flashing an sph-l710 rom and hope to god that it works... youve already voided your samsung warranty and most likely your cariiers warranty. if all else fails, have it j-taged or if you have insurance use it.

heres a link to the latest sprint firmware. its very simple, just hold vol. down + home + power and open the .exe file. after that connect your phone to your pc and flash the rom

ps: download the file that ends with ".exe"

Thanks funkylogik. I got to the part where Odin opened and I selected the files to download, my phone was supposed to download and reboot.

While you've probably already gotten your issue resolved, I can't help notice this step that I've quoted. The video I watched said to uncheck the auto-reboot in Odin, and to start the phone in recovery on the next boot.

I only clicked on this thread as I am in the learning stages of rooting the S3...I haven't done it yet, but I figured I'd read up on people's experiences so I am ahead of the game when I start to root.

Can anyone tell me if that's likely the reason it didn't work for the OP? I'm trying to learn a few things here.
