Root [International] Can't write to /system/etc even when root!

DiBosco

Newbie
Folks,

I'm a very experienced Linux user and have rooted my S3 to get rid of all the crap ware. I also want to to increase the puny maximum output volume.

So, I have installed ssh, connected to the phone from my linux box and tried:

[HIGH]cp default_gain.conf /system/etc[/HIGH]

From the SD card where I put the updated default_gain.conf

It says:

[HIGH]
cp: can't create '/system/etc/default_gain.conf': Read-only file system[/HIGH]

Even though I am root.

Tried a couple of root GUI file explorers...same result.

Doing

[HIGH] ll /system[/HIGH]

Shows that the permissions are set-up for root to have write permissions.

Anyone know WTF is going on please?!

Thanks! :)

You have to mount the partition as R/W. I don't know how to do that in a shell, I use Root Explorer to mess with that. Good luck!

Thanks. How do I mount it as root? I don't mind using root explorer at all. I turned to the shell as explorer wasn't working for me!

I've never used root explorer. But, if you use ES File Explorer and got to settings, then scroll to the bottom and check root options then make sure "Make System Writable" you should be able to write to /system/

Got it! Thanks, Valorian and Richsz. I'd also got ES File Explorer installed and fiddled around with that until it asked me if I wanted to give r/w permissions to /system. Louder music a go-go!

Please tell us how you made the music louder.

FYI: Probably too late now but Root Browser (free) can nicely edit and create stuff in System.

Sure. :)

I kind of followed the instructions here.

I sort of used method 1, but first actually copied default_volume.conf from /system/etc to my sdcard, from there to my computer, so I could edit them easily and then back to the sd card, then from there to /system/etc

I also copied the volume.db they provide from computer to sd card to /system/etc.

It's much louder now.

or you can flash a custom kernel that has tweakable audio settings :)

Yes, and it is much easier. It has made me lazy though relying on the likes of Gok to do the kernel building and using STweaks. Part of me loved the challenge of running scripts direct from terminal on my Nokia N900.

Im glad i dont have to do that lol. Having to self sign Symbian apps was complex enough for me mate :)

Waiting days for a dev certificate and its key to sign something like "Nokemote" and the other one that made your screen rotate, ROM patcher hacks. Oh happy days. Symbian was fantastic until touch screens. Why did Nokia never go the Android route? Or better still the Meego route?

Totaly man their hardware was excelent. I had my N95 when the 1st iphone came out that couldnt even record video and had 2g lol the Nokia blew it away. I had the low memory silver one so i had to use that app to get auto rotate workin too. Took me ages but i was so proud when it worked :) remember those dodgy russion Python apps lol? I had one that would pester a strangers phone over bluetooth until they gave up and hit yes allowing u to send something to their phone. Including a programme that aparently bricked SE phones lol. I didnt have the heart to try that one :)
