Help Battery Drained 43% in 30 minutes

Hey guys, new to the forum here.

I have noticed the past couple of days that my S3 has been acting very strangely.
I unplug it from the charger in the morning and it says 100% battery. About 30 minutes later it has drained to 57% obviously very rapidly. It then continues to drain battery normally. What is happening? I don't think this is a battery issue, but may be a software issue with not detecting properly how much charge the phone is holding or something? I've checked my battery usage and nothing stands out to me during these times.

The stock battery stats app isn't very helpful. I'd suggest downloading betterbatterystats, gsam battery monitor, or wake lock detector to help us track down if its a rogue app
 
Run the battery down from a full charge then post some screenshots of gsam and the stock monitor.
I dont know why its dropping so fast and then leveling off though. You could be right that its a calibration thing mate
 
Been getting fast battery drain lately too. Going into settings and checking on battery usage I've noticed both Gallery and Samsung Link using the most. If I force stop those, the battery lasts all day. This is new behaviour. I know Samsung Link is new and to be honest, I've never used it. Any suggestions?

I had exactly the same experience and solved it by going into App Manager and hit the "Uninstall updates" button. Then I allowed it to update the next time I checked for app updates and, since then, it's been fine. I seem to remember that Samsung released a fresh update very shortly after the previous update, so I assume they found the bug and fixed it.

I had the same sort of problem with another Samsung update recently, although I can't remember which one it was, so they seem in danger of making a habit of issuing problematic updates, but everything seems to have been sorted out now.
 
Okay guys so I did a full charge last night and this morning when I unplugged my phone at 100% it immediately told me it was at 58%. I locked my phone and unlocked it again and it told me it was back to 100%. Its been about 10 minutes so far and my battery is almost at 70%. I assume it will drain to 58% as it has the last couple of days. So far the biggest usage of battery has been apps since my screen hasn't been on for much of the duration. The list of the top apps are:
Kernel 14%
Android System 13.9%
Chomp SMS (texting app) 12.9%
System (*wakelock*)?? 10.8%
GSam Battery Monitor 6.5%

I don't think the apps are the problem, I think I may just try a factory restore or something... Its becoming a bit frustrating for such a new and advanced phone!

I agree with you. If the phone is telling you its immediately at 58% after taking it off the charger at 100% you've got something out of the ordinary going on.

The two easiest/cheapest things to start with would he to try replacing the battery or the charger.

Anker is a decent brand on amazon that'll be around $10. The charging cable less than that.
 
Thanks for the help guys, I did a factory restore and it seems at first glance to have fixed the problem. I completely forgot that it would erase all of my numbers though, any idea how to check if those were somehow backed up by google or something? Not sure if I ever backed them up.
 
If they were backed up, they should just automaticly be there when you log the phone in when you boot it after the reset. Glad the battery monitor problem is fixed though :thumbup:
 
A recent Google Play Services update introduced a bug which saw a severe battery-drainage become a problem for some, with a specific location-related bug being the culprit. It would appear that the new 4.1.10 Google Play Store update corrects that issue, something that will be music to the ears of those affected – HTC users especially appeared to be in particularly bad shape.

Well I finally got tired of all the battery drain AND various Google services live Gmail were no longer syncing without me forcing it. So i decided to do a factory data reset. I've now had my phone off of charge for about three hours (been using it allot) and still have 93% showing. Yesterday, I'd have been in the 60% range.

I too noticed a battery drain coming from that "app". I downgraded it and was then pestered by other google apps saying they would not work unless I updated it. The notice would keep coming back after being dismissed.

I downgraded all the google apps (since you can't install them) and Service. I don't see the drain now. I'm sure at some point I will be forced to take their updates.

Add to this the fact that Google Play store seems to update itself automatically and change its settings (specifically the one to not auto update other apps). I turned my phone on one day to find many updates that I did not want happening.

Google, in my opinion, is quickly forgetting their "Don't be evil" motto.
