Root [International] Dualboot Nandroid ROMs?

I change between two ROMs every now and then. Is there a way to create a dual boot setup using two different backups?

You don't boot from backups, you boot into two different ROM setups and for this you require a custom kernel capable of handling 2 ROMs via a boot selection. The only ones I know off at the moment are Siyah and GoogyMax, both of which you can find here http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1685.

Haven't personally tried dual boot capable, but I believe it works. You als need to read up on both as to what type of ROM they can handle, i.e. Samsung based or CM10.1 or ASOP/AOKP and then choose the correct ROMs. Good luck.;)

any idea how long boot takes when changing rom mate? Do apps have to "optimize" each time? If you add like an app when using one rom, will it be in the other?

Apps wouldn't sync between them
It'll function as two different operating systems.

Back on my evo we could boot up to 4 or 5 different ROMs from our SD card

Yes, I'm sure Rxpert is right. They reside as completely independent ROMs on one and the same device, that includes all caches, apps, system, data, etc. The only thing I think they share, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, would be files and folders you store, like photos, music, docs and so on.

i had it setup back on the s3 and it worked great it gives u an option to press vol down to boot second rom otherwise it boots directly into the 1st rom. You would need to have the Stweaks app installed to customize the 2nd rom details as booting into recovery would always show u the 1st rom only and not the 2nd.

@Heat57 yup you are correct only the physical files are shared, it will create a new file/folder on ure internal memory called .secondrom which is normally about 1.5gb which would store ure 2nd rom details. It works great with siyah kernel u should give it a go.

Thanks lads. I might actualy give it a try when i get another HDMI adaptor.. aparently it only works with tw roms.
So, sorry, im tryin to understand this lol, both the roms have the same google account but play store treats them as two separate devices?:beer:

P.s, hows the s4 Silent mate? Is it a big upgrade? Is it as easy to hack as the s3?

What I meant was, if you install an app on 1 ROM, it won't be installed on another when you boot up

Thanks guys. so can the second room be installed using a nandroid or do you have to use a zip or tar?

either u can isntall it normally or restore a nandroid whichever you prefer.

@Funky i love my s4 its good phone got a few nice updates over the s3 and its equally easy to root although when i tried to do it the 1st time i soft bricked it flashed the wrong file lol go really really scared but managed to reflash a stock firmware from sammobile. Only couple of thing i really really miss are NeatRom and the wallpaper scrolling which lets me use apps like multipicture live wallpaper which basically lets u set different pics on each home screen.

Cool thanks. Now unfortunately it seems JB 4.2.1 / CM 10.1 support is being dropped by siyah .... Meh ... Guess I either have to decide what I want or get a second phone :)

I read somewhere today, its development thats being dropped for it. It works but its something about the updated Mali drivers and not wanting to have 3 different drivers in the kernel. I think it may have been on xda :o

Actually on the Siyah page directly:

SiyahKernel | "One kernel to rule them all"

tested only on Samsung 4.1.2 latest official ROM and CM-10.1 nightly (30/3/2013). Samsung 4.2 leaks are not supported. Also CM10 support is dropped as I don’t want to keep 3 different mali drivers in the kernel.

What is not clear to me is, if he means he is dropping 10 only but continues with 10.1 once the RTM version of 4.2 is out .. who knows .. we shall see ..

At the moment the WanamLite ROM seems to make my decision easier to go back to CM10.1 (wanted dual boot CM10.1 and WanamLite 6.7).

I will try some different kernel (rather than Adam) and maybe some different settings, but so far I am not that happy with WanamLite .. Issue is really RAM usage .. doesn't take long until the thing comes to a crawl and I need to either reboot or kill processes - which is something I shouldn't have to do ..

People seem to love WanamLite so I wonder why I got such a problem with performance.

I'm guessing they dropped CM10 support because it is not widely used anymore. You can't even find it on the CM downloads page now. CM10.1 won't be dropped for a while I imagine; and even then the current kernel will still support it so you could just keep the 1.9.1 (in case it gets removed)

I'm pretty sure that the dev has moved on from Samsung so I'm not sure if we'll ever see Siyah for the 4.2.2 Touchwiz versions. Other devs will surely continue though, such as the Perseus kernel which is based on Siyah.
