Hello and JB issues

stwallers

Newbie
I wanted to start by saying thanks to everyone here. I've been reading this site off and on since I got my bionic (after switching from the original droid, which thanks to this site, I rooted and use as a wifi music server attached to my stereo). I do find I'm checking it a lot more often since the switch to JB.

The bottom line is I've had so many problems from a device that was running seamlessly for my usage under ICS. It's currently unrooted (never has been) and I've done the clear cache and FDR since the "up"grade to JB. I thought I'd mention some of the issues I still have to see if anyone has ideas on the source(s) or how to fix. Some of these may be issues with the apps or other devices.

(1) In my experience the battery drain is still much worse than ICS. I briefly tried google now but it destroyed my battery life (and was slow on voice search) so I disabled it. I'm not even sure why the drain is greater now.

(2) My biggest complaint is the loss of the long press voice search. It was probably my most often used feature. Google now isn't a good replacement due to the overhead in load time and battery usage. I was able to add the icon to my main homescreen as a fix. I guess there's no way to re-enable the long press?

(3) I use chrome and noticed that all pages seem to run a lot slower under JB than ICS. Here I'm not sure if this is due to JB or chrome. I also noticed that the navigation bar auto hides itself and I'd rather it be there all the time. My guess is this is a chrome feature but I can't figure out how to change it (if I can)

(4) Handcent sms seems to have some issues. It's always had problems syncing fb photos but it's worse now. I think this might be due to contacts issues.

(5) Contacts issues. Not really a JB issue. This is the biggest problem with having to do an FDR. I have 4 google accounts plus fb and others. I thought I had it all solved on my computer but after this I'm back to multiple unjoined contacts for many of my contacts. If anyone has ever figured out an easy fix for this, I;d love to hear it.

(6) I use the Motorola T505 for hands free operation in my car. My biggest issue right now is that it will sync with my phone and play music but I can't seem to get it to work for calls. They always go to speaker phone instead of the device. Does anyone else have this problem? I've tried all the settings I can find. It's strange because a call will come in while I'm playing music through bluetooth and then the call still goes to the phone speaker. And I've given up on voice dialing about two updates ago.

(7) Swype. I loved the interface (size, keyboard layout, usage). Since the update it is horrible. It seems to autotype the wrong word all the time. It also doesn't work in some apps by not spacing between words. Manually adding a space sort of works but (a) you have to remember to tap space and (b) it then capitalizes every word.

Seriously, I wish I never updated to JB or had the option to go back. In general, I find it to be more sluggish under most apps.

Oh, and I have one unrelated issue to ask about that I've have for awhile now. I have a screen "flicker." It's not really a flicker but more of a set of microlines that waver up and down the display constantly. It isn't always present and is much worse on lighter screens (I switched my wallpaper to solid dark black). I've tried using different display settings (light v dark, constant v auto) and it still there. If it's really bad, then turning off and on the display will usually improve it. I'm thinking it might be a hardware problem and haven't found anything about it on the web. Has anyone encountered this? While it is somewhat annoying it's manageable and I'm reluctant to look into a replacement because I'm sure it isn't under warranty and I don't want to upgrade and lose my unlimited data.

Sorry for the long post. If anyone has advice for any of my issues I'd love to hear it.

Check for developer mode and it was off.

I'm finding that my battery life is much closer to normal with google now off.

My next thing to play with is see what might be taking pages on chrome so slow to load. I might check other browsers to try to trace down the problems

I would like to second the loss fo the long press search button for voice commands. How can I re-enable this? Where did voice commands go?

Thanks,
Chris

In parallel I just got a replacement OEM battery form Amazon. It was $11.00 including shipping. Perhaps that would help in your case also.

I actually did that about 6 months ago (think it was the same price). IT's a no brainer at that price and I recommended it to several friends. Back when I had ICS I did some trials and found they both ran completely identically. Think I only had to switch to the backup one time. Since JB I've had both batteries drain on me several times. I'm still hopeful having google now off will make it better.

And to the voice search comment, the best I've found is just drag the voice search icon (found under apps) to the main home page. Not as nice but does reduce it to one press.

So a couple weeks ago I dropped my bionic and cracked the screen. I had no idea it could be repaired until I checked the bionic reference page on this forum and found a link to fixing a cracked screen. Well this weekend I finally fixed it having ordered a Touch Screen Digitizer Replacement on Amazon for $16, a $1.50 repair kit (mini tools) and a roll of (way more than necessary) adhesive for ~$1. First a big thank you to this forum. After finding out it could be done I found an in depth youtube video of the process. It took me about 45 minutes being extra careful.

The pluses:
(1) I can keep my unlimited data plan since I don't have to upgrade my phone

(2) My screen flicker is gone. I have no idea what caused it but the screen works perfectly and is crystal clear. It even seems to look better than my old screen but it is 2 years newer. I guess I should have cracked my screen sooner.

I still wish I could go back to ICS but maybe I'll find time this weekend to try to optimize my phone for the long haul.

Surprised the FDR didn't fix your lag issues, as it sure fixed mine. The Chrome issues are specific to the app, not JB. The auto-hide nav bar is a new feature, and the slowness is due to the fact that it's blown up to the point that 2Gb of RAM is really needed to run it smoothly now.

One thing you could try, if you're comfortable with rooting, is a different ROM such as Cyanogenmod. Definitely helps make old hardware seem more up-to-date. I'm currently running a newer version of Android (4.3) than the new Droids and GS4 thanks to CM10.2. Check the rooting forum if interested.

So rooting was my plan. I even had time set aside at work to do it. So far no luck. I tried the simple procedure posted in the rooting section from droidrzr but it failed since my office computer was on a wired LAN and the wireless access is a different subnet. I either have to figure that out or try it at home.

I was going to try the flying jelly ROM once rooted but Cyanogenmod might be an option. I wish there was an easy checklist/comparison for all the different ROMs.

As for chrome, I started using it for ease across systems but the lag (probably due to excess resource usage) is going to lead me to switch.

It took a lot of trial and error to root my phone but I was eventually successful (I think the problem was an old slow XP laptop I was using, well after not having updated USB and motorola drivers). It actually shocked me when it finally was successful, I didn't do anything different.

I'm trying out running CM10.2 and flying jelly using safestrap. I'm finding I like flying jelly a lot more though there were some things I preferred in CM10.2. I'm still new to it so I haven't tried much optimization. Definitely feels like I have a new phone.

Good.

If you want to continue this thread on root-related topics I can move it to the All Things Root sub-forum ... or you could start a new thread there.

thanks, no need to move it. It can just be retired. Any questions I would have would be new and unrelated.
