Eris to v2.x, when?

See, this is the reason why android is so messed up. 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1. Half a dozen to one, 6 to another. No one at verizon gives a rats ass what os you're on. As long as their fat little wallets are full.

This is gonna come back to bite them in their ass. Agreed some people don't care, but the ones in the know do. And they aren't verizon employees either.

If Sprint had half-way decent coverage I'd be all over that like white on rice.

T-Mobile was the original adopter of Android and it is just as stratified as Verizon.

You'll pay for overpriced phones on Sprint? Really?

First time user of a smart phone here.

The idea in the company I work for was to link the engineering department through one of this smart phones, instead of the MS messenger (or plain email), also most engineers preferred and suggested an Android phone (company issued).
At the time it seemed fair to phase out having to carry a phone and a net device.

Our company (mid size SP 500) has abandon issuing Eris, not reliable is what they are telling us.
I hope they don't ask us to return them, they used to issue regular phone, good for voice and text only.

I've heard IT guys at work saying that the BB devices are closer to been real production tools than these (toy) google devices...

Blackberries do seem to be preferred amongst business professionals. Android seems to be more on the performance side of the smartphone spectrum. Sure, you can still get work done on them, but you have resources to do a hell of a lot more. And some people want that.

On top of that, they seem to play nice with company servers. Android is new and hasn't established itself amongst the business world. Even iPhone users run into problems sometimes, but are still better suited than Android users.

True about BB, but please explain how the iPhone is better suited to corporate Exchange servers than the Android.

Iphones come with a "native" outlook client...

There's something about the look of a phone as well that makes it a bit more professional. Not better or the sole reason businessmen use it. I can't really think of an Android phone that looks "smart and conservative" like some BBs do. iPhones are sleek and all that jazz, but for some reason, a professional with an iPhone still looks like a professional with it.

These are just my views on the phones. Having a smartphone doesn't make you a good, successful person.

Okay. I was reading Twitter feeds this morning and saw an actual communication from someone at Verizon other than an acerebral store jockey.

@drifted_thought No info yet has been released about the update for the eris

How is that for useful?

That came from Twitter username: VZWSupport

Yep. But I don't know that it's as much how the phone looks, as how it's perceived. Through branding, we've been trained to think of BBs as "business phones," and so when we see one, we automatically think "business."

Sort of, but not a full functioning client from what I hear. I use Touchdown, albeit a slight cost, and I can sync multiple Exchange server accounts. Can the iPhone do that with the "native" client? I guess the point is, or the question is, how is that better suited? I've not seen them side by side so I'm really curious. Now as for BB, that's quite another story.

Wait so your asking if the native client on the iphone is better than a paid app on your android phone?

Totally subjective and irrelevant to the majority of business people. Let's try to keep this substantive for the time being.

A lot of this business capability talk around BB, iPone, Android is based on perceptions and not being up to date on technology. The discussion should include the version of Exchange you are using, the version of phone, and the type of gateway. We have both BES for BB and Good for Android/iPhone. You could also use Exchanges Activesync. I have used BES and Good and prefer Good/Android solution over BES/BB. It is innaccurate for anyone to make a blanket statement w/o a discussion on the specifics.

Good points. However, BES is an entity unto itself and probably shouldn't be included in this discussion. As for Exchange versions, I'm pretty much talking of E2k3 forward, with much more emphasis on E2k7 and 2010 since Activesync is much more functional on the later versions. I will always say, though, BB is unbeatable at this time for email, especially with multiple email accounts.

Latest rumor from a store salesperson, who also claimed to be an Eris user, is that the update with begin to roll out April 24th. She claims that she received a text message from Verizon stating this. I'll believe it when I see it, but I just thought I'd pass that along.

Also, the holster clips from Verizon are pretty sturdy and I'm liking mine so far. I picked it up on Saturday. This was my reason for going into the store.

Interesting, thanks.
Not saying you should have, but I woulda politely asked if I could see the text message.

Yeah me too, then I would have promptly took a picture and posted it here. Then I am sure you would have received about 100 or so thanks.:D

She claimed that it was in the back charging because she has not charged it the night before... I may have to make another trip by there and see if she can produce the text message.

i too have heard from my local verizon store that it should be rolling out on the 24th.

I got a strange text message from number 6200 that had some odd scripting language at least the way it showed up in Handcent, perhaps I should look at it in the default text message program.. I would look now, but I have been using a BBStorm 2 for the last few days on my number.. Verizon must think I'm nuts in the last 3 weeks I have had the Eris, a Palm Pre+ and the BB Storm 2 on my account.

Liked the Pre OS alot but the apps are terrible, the BB OS 5 update didn't change much from the old v4 stuff...Wish they'd use more color..

Just one hour ago, I spoke with a young man working at the Verizon store. I was going to ask if/when they'd get any Incredibles to play with, since my wife just pre-ordered hers this morning. He had his Eris sitting on the counter. I asked about an update, and he just laughed, and said he doesn't think we'll be getting any update. I said "But you know they said...." He just laughed again. Then even said I shouldn't have bought an Eris. That I shoulda got a Droid or waited for the Incredible. So I just said "aight man, whatever" he was like "I'm just saying, I don't think they'll upgrade it."

Now that's a true story. BUT, I don't believe him. In fact, I'm done even hearing what any VZW employee says when it comes to the 2.1 OTA. I'll believe it when I see it myself. Even though I still think it'll be by this weekend.;)
