Help Weird photo glitches

josh0322

Newbie
I just got my Nexus 4 last week and aside from the phone sliding off the wireless charger and these photo glitches, I love it.
Can anyone help determine if I have a damaged device or what the issue might be? I have not dropped, rocked, jolted, and wet(ted?) this phone whatsoever.
Here are the screwy photos:

Wow, very odd!

Does it do that with any other camera apps? (Try Camera 360 on Play). Also try clearing the cache and data of the camera app (Settings -> Apps -> All -> Camera -> Clear Cache & Data).

How loud is the rattle when you shake it (it's the camera focus mechanism and most N4's will rattle to some extent).

Haven't noticed it in any other apps but I'll try instagram and the one you mentioned. There's the tiniest rattle - I hadn't noticed that either until you said something.

I should mention that I rooted this phone. Hope that wasn't the cause.
And I can't find a camera app where you described...
Thanks for your help!

Stock root. No ROM. I'll double check camera effects. Pretty sure none are on
I rooted the phone shortly after getting it two weeks ago. No previous photos

Thanks for the link, lion.
Still not sure what the deal is with these photos. I really hope it's not a hardware issue.
Could it be the HDR screwing up?

.. try turning HDR off

I had a similar issue and that's what it turned out to be. Seems you need a VERY steady hand with HDR.

I agree. All the examples show huge amounts of motion blur, the phone was moving while the image(s) were captured. HDR works by combining a series of images taken automatically from a stationary position and will produce all sorts of problems if the camera is not held reasonably still or anything in the scene is moving.

With HDR off the pictures above would still be blurred (not the phone's fault) but wouldn't show the "glitches".

+1 for switching HDR off, especially for moving object. My problem was that the image never matched the preview and I was always missing the moment.

I agree with trying to turn HDR off. I've had pictures of my daughter with 2 noses due to HDR.

I love HDR, just a shame I have to turn it off for moving photos.

I'd blame the power station... ;-)

PS: I now live in Lancashire but I lived most of my life just down the road from Hartlepool in Billingham. I watched the building (and very late commissioning) of Hartlepool Power Station with interest before putting the Pennines between me and it :-)

PPS: That wasn't really the prime reason for my move - but it certainly did help my decision!

Moved across the pennines closer to Sellafield? Out of the pan and into the fire? :-)

I'm a long way from Sellafield - 72 miles as the (two-headed) crow flies - and 78 miles from Hartlepool, both with a lot of substantial high ground in between.

Compare that to my old address which was only marginally further from Sellafield (90 miles) but rather closer to the Hartlepool site - less than 5 miles away over over flat marshland.

Guess which location makes me feel more comfortable? :-)
