Help SGSII Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update - Problem Google Play Music keeps opening itself.

Lurker
I am probably an atypical smartphone user but I do not play music on my phone or use social network sites, etc. So Google/Samsung provides me with 20+ apps I do not use and cannot delete. However, on updating to JB 4.1.2, I now have Play Music opening itself all the time. I know the real answer is to root my phone but is there any way I can gain control of Play Music without taking this step.

I may be being stupid but when I follow your instructions, I am not presented with the option to Disable, only to Uninstall updates, i.e. the same screen as under Downloaded, whereas if I select Google Play Movies I can select Disable.

We're on the same page JeffW12. Go ahead and uninstall the updates. That will cause Google Play Music to revert to the factory installed version. Once that's done you can disable it.

I believe that your Play Store app is installing these updates automatically whenever you connect to Wi-Fi. You can disable that feature by opening the Play Store, tapping on Settings, then Auto-update apps. Choose do not Auto-update apps. Once that's done you'll receive a notification when an update is available but it will now be up to you whether or not to update it. Seeing as you don't use it there's really no reason for you to install them. They're just taking up space you could use for other things.

Many thanks for your reply. Problem solved! Funnily enough, it did occur to me in bed last night that your technique might work. I have also changed my Play Store setting. I would never have allowed my PC to be auto-update but I am slowly learning how my SGS2 ticks.

Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your explanation. I had been tearing my hair out trying to stop google play music from auto starting, and with my hairline, that's a quick road to baldness.

Here's some more information that will not only disable the app, but help conserve some storage.

Follow the previous advice until you get to the screen that allows you to disable the app. From there, before disabling, select the following options in the following order;
  • force stop (this closes the app)
  • clear data (this will clear the cache/data taken up by the app)
  • uninstall updates (if available), then again hit force stop, and clear data (after app has reverted)
  • disable app

The above order will clear out any garbage left behind by the app in addition to disabling it. On the S2 OEM 4.1.2 firmware, there are MANY Samsung and Google apps that can be disabled. Go to your applications drawer and make a note of which apps you don't want to see, then go about disabling them. If you see a service (an app that doesn't show up in your app drawer), I recommend not disabling it unless you know for absolute certainty that you won't be using that service.
