Need help on a decision

Hey guys,

My s3 has been extremely slow lately. Letters appearing seconds later after I type them in messenger, lag as I'm navigating through windows or applications, just sluggishness in general. My battery life has decreased by a couple of hours too - which I think is an effect from a past update, correct?

All that being said, I'm trying to decide whether or not I should root the phone and flash another ROM. I've rooted my old Incredible and that was a success, so between the helpful users here and the straightforward guides I'm not afraid of rooting the s3.

Just trying to figure out if that's the best solution for me. Maybe a factory reset is enough? I don't know though, starting to get sick of Verizon and their crap firmware.

Thanks

I have rooted my two phones - First was Samsung galaxy and other was Sony Xperia.

Both the times I found that the performance of the device decreased drastically soon after rooting.

Is it normal or am I just afraid that your S3 might also face the slowness, since one issue with the S3 is the lag issue.

First try "clear cache partition" in recovery mode mate (turn phone off, hold in power, home and volume up until it boots into recovery, clear cache partition)
Or you could try the App Cache Cleaner widget
Or is your internal storage maybe really full?

The s3 really shouldnt be laggy mate. Mine flys but i had to do a few things to get it that way. Simply rooting a phone wont affect the performance, its what you do after rooting that does

Thank you, I'll try that in a little bit and get back to you. It says I have 8GB left out of 12 so I don't think lack of internal memory is the issue.

Unless that's not the internal storage lol?

Totally agree with you mate.

In my case, the drop in the performance was immediately after the rooting process, which means literally I didn't do anything after rooting apart from the normal usage like attending calls / browsing the web / listenin to music :(

Yeah thats the internal SD (storage) mate and that should be fine so try clearing the cache. If that doesnt help you might have to try the dreaded factory reset

If youre interested in rooting though, check out the sub-forum at top of this forum for your particular carrier version

I just did it so I'll test it out for a few hours/days and see.

You said rooting the phone won't effect the performance? I understand that but if I flash a rom such as CM10 that may improve the performance though correct? And fix my battery decrease which I think the update messed up?

Thanks, by the way!

Yeah flashing a lighter unbloated rom will speed things up and if you use a custom kernel you can overclock it to make things faster or underclock it when you wana save battery. Aparently CM is pretty bad on battery life but theres plenty other roms. Im using AOKP which is great but you can be less drastic and use a samsung-based rom so that you keep all the fancy samsung features :)

P.s, was it the verizon update that messed up your battery? Thats caused by the modem firmware and is easily replaced

Unfortunately I can't really pinpoint why my battery life isn't as good as it used to be. Some users are saying the update to 4.1.2 caused it for their phones so that's why I'm guessing it has something to do with that for my phone as well.

Thanks for the rooting information. I'll stop bothering you and do some research for myself now.

Lol im bored mate. Youre not bothering me :) if youre on one of the north american s3s then i cant give you any more specific advice though, mine is a completely different version. Good luck man
