Root [KERNEL] MiRaGe - for HTC stock ICS ROM - 3.0.101 - 10222013

Stock rooted deodexed w/Leedroid tweaks, cam and music mods, and mrg666's latest kernel, one of the best setups I've ever ran on this phone :-)

I will have a few more photographs up tomorrow morning.
I enjoyed all of the Belize pictures, especially "Sunset on Easy Street", "Caribbean Style Mansion", "Man and Bottles". "A Very Small Business" is my favorite so far. Thanks again for sharing.

Did you check the music mod I posted recently? Which one are you using?

Here is a new build of MiRaGe kernel with the following changes
- backported the latest row io scheduler from CAF msm-3.4 kernel and set as default
- Linux 3.0.83-rc1
- cputime and proc/stat updates and optimizations

Depending on the feedback on ROW scheduler, I am planning to remove SIO scheduler in the next build.
Linux 3.0.83 will be announced officially tomorrow but I have already included rc1 here since it is a very minor patch.

Enjoy!

Could you provide a link for Leedroid. I am searching but not finding it.

See at the bottom of the first post below (last download link)

I have been testing the ROW I/O scheduler but I haven't seen any benefit of ROW over the good/old SIO scheduler in any benchmark. I have applied all patches I could find to the kernel block system hoping that it would help ROW show a better performance but there is still no difference. I am a little frustrated and disappointed with the amount of time and effort I have put into this scheduler.

I am updating the kernel in the OP with the latest block updates to be fair in our testing as much as possible. After what I have seen, I think I will remove ROW in the the next build since it is bigger and more complex than SIO. We don't need this overhead when there is no benefit of it. Please post your benchmark results if you can find any benefit.

Can you add Smoothass Governor and VR I/O Scheduler?

Leedroid and Erasmux are not updating neither smartass not smoothass anymore. I have tested them and the latest Interactive governor which is still being actively developed by Google is performing much better in Android 4+ with multiple cores. Give it a try. Latest interactive that I have backported from the latest AOSP kernel is at least as responsive as smoothass with very good battery life.

I'll stick to ondamand but thanks anyway

An interesting article
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTM3NDQ
It is not about ARM but nevertheless ...

Interesting but the article specifys Intel CPUs and its very different to our Snapdragon which is a cousin of AMD CPUs

Edit: And this is comparing Linux to Android. Android tailored to each specific phone Linux on the other hand is made to work on many PCs so Stability comes into play when it comes to comparisons.

Edit2: Off topic but what do you think of the Galaxy Ring?

I just pointed out since you mentioned the ondemand governor. It is a generic governor and the design is pretty old.

You are right that Snapdragon's Adreno GPU is based on AMD's Imageon which was a derivative of Radeon before they sold it. But the CPU is ARM.

If you want, I can prepare a special MiRaGe kernel for your ROM. Let me know.

I have also seen Galaxy Ring. Hardware specs appear to be the same with Reverb. I am wondering what could be different. There is an unactivated Reverb on my desk begging me for a kernel. I am now thinking maybe the same kernel can be used for both with minor modifications.

it would seem that way. i like that they're Snapdragon devices and the only differences i see are 1GB vs 768MB Ram and some physical changes like the Home Button and overall shape. Overall i'd say its a decent phone i wouldn't mind having since it has Jelly Bean :)

I'm new to the Evo V - my ebay'd Evo is on its way. Does the Evo require rooting to install this kernel? And if so how is that done? I've read various threads here and it sounds like a much more complicated process than it was for my old Optimus V - I' m running Mirage on my OpV right now. Do I simply use Flash GUI and flash the kernel? A nudge in the right direction would be appreciated. What's the simplest and most effective way to root & ROM this phone?

I don't have this device, so I'll leave the root process to our all things root guide/other users here... but I'd strongly recommend flashing things manually from recovery, and not relying on an app to automate recovery functions.

You will need to root first. The second step is s-off but it is optional although recommended. If you don't do s-off, FlashImageGUI is also very reliable. 4ext recovery has a smart flash method for kernel with s-on but it frequently fails. I have flashed the kernel with FlashImageGUI many times, it never failed. If you do s-off, flashing with 4ext recovery is recommended.

I have uploaded the new build of MiRaGe kernel

- synced with Linux 3.0.84
- backported kernel/smp updates from Linux 3.10-rc5
- backported latest interactive governor updates Google common-3.4 kernel
- cleaned up log spamming of atmel touch driver
- backported ashem updates from Google common 3.4 kernel
- merged the latest update of ROW scheduler from CAF msm-3.4 kernel and set as default i/o scheduler (SIO is gone)

With the latest interactive cpu governor updates, cpu stats show more cpu time spent at the lowest frequency. I regularly see >90% cpu time spent at the minimum frequency (with the configuration of my phone, yours can be different) which is ~7% higher than previous builds. It seems like this improved the battery life.

I have been testing ROW I/O scheduler more than a week now. I didn't see much/any difference in the end-user experience although there are slight performance improvements in file system benchmarks. But there were no problems either with stability or battery life. In the end, ROW is the latest i/o scheduler specifically developed for mobile devices at Qualcomm/CAF. So let's stick with the latest code and retire SIO which is now almost two years old without any updates.

Enjoy!

Flashing .84 now. It could be my imagination, but I was getting better battery life with .79 than with .82. I did not try .83. If I don't use the internet and make a few short calls or send some messages, I can skip charging for at least two nights, even with some music playback.

The latest kernel best /!\ Thanks for the hard work .!!"
Good battery ..
