Help Unwanted apps keep downloading themselves!

How do I stop this? This morning "Get Wonga!" downloaded itself onto my phone. I'm always getting orange stars in my status bar with some spammy info on them too.

It's probably from an app you downloaded. Try to think of when this started, then remove any app that you might have installed around that time.

Sounds like something to do with Getjar to me, you download apps to earn stars and unlock stuff using them, not sure why it's spamming you or auto downloading though, never encountered that.

I know this from using GO Weather in the past :)

Download Avast mobile security and do a virus scan....i know android phones are not plagued by viruses but it may detect dodgy apps.

If you are rooted, install lbe security master from xda developers site, its been converted to english, not from google play...unless you can read chinese! :) Run a virus scan and adware scan from the app.

Hey, many thanks for your advice.

I downloaded Lookout Ad network detector and it identified that the Startapp ad network is responsible. Unfortunately though, my GpsFix app uses Startapp ad network and I use GpsFix to kick start my sat nav into action!

Is there anything else I can use to get my GPS going so I can bin GpsFix?

ETA: I've downloaded and done the Avast virus scan and it has detected 2 problems that 2 potentially unwatned programs have been detected - Where's My Droid which I downloaded in case i lose my phone when on silent, it deactivates silent mode and makes it ring for me, the other one is a game called brick creaker I could lose but I doubt that either of these are genuine threats?

"GPS Status & Toolbox" and "GPS Status - Test and Fix" (there are 2 apps with the GPS Status in their name and both work) will reset GPS without adding annoying ads.

Next time you get a star notification, long press on the notification then tap "app info" then uninstall the app it directs you to (after giving it a bad review) i have no respect for devs who use that kind of advertising

Problem is, long pressing doesn't do anything except when I eventually take my finger off the star, it takes me to a website!

I've uninstalled gpsfix so hopefully that will put paid to the spam problem.

Anyone know if "Where's my droid" is really malware?

If you're using Avast why not use their Anti-theft if you're concerned about it (although I don't think "where's my droid" is malware, just be a false positive and/or Avast trying to encourage you to use their Anti-theft instead ;)). I use Avast's Anti-theft on two phones and can recommend it (I'm not affiliated in any way), and now there's a web interface for it it's so much better - and free! You just need to create an Avast account to be able to use it.
