Help Choosing - Yes or no?

Hello guys and gals, I really need some help at choosing, getting the sense and enlightening myself in smartphones, concretely Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

I'll ask things because my brother wants to buy a smartphone...well, he'd be happy for it, but, neither of us know a thing about any smartphones, Android or anything. Long or average story short, we're users of old Nokias, so I think it will be clear.

Alright, at first the phone should be like 300$ USD or around it, Samsung Galaxy Nexus is an exception since personally, I really like it, but don't know a heck of it.

I just don't understand some things, for example, how will I be able to log in in internet? Just click phone's "button" and boom, that's it? Or I have to adjust some device to it? Really, don't laugh at me. <_> (Wi-fi)

Also what are Widgets or its meaning? Can I have Wi-fi at my own house or everywhere? Is the phone worth it? Is it durable and smooth? Will I be able to access any new applications Android will release? And simply, how to access those applications if I'd have it? Just a basic preview of the whole smartphone devices would be really helpful, and comparison between Samsung Galaxy Nexus and other low-priced smartphones too, thanks for taking time of reading this, just had to do it.

Read my lips, like nexus 4.

$300 brand new, will be first to get updates. Works on ATT/Tmobile or other gsm. Will connect automatically to WiFi first then cellular. APN will need to have settings entered before you can click internet button for the bam. Very easy to do.

Spend some time on Google for answers like what's a widget. First widget you want is Google Now. It will blow your mind.

The Nexus 4 referenced above is the replacement version of Nexus that replaced the Galaxy Nexus and can be found currently under Devices on the Google Play Store. You can still get the Galaxy Nexus from places like ebay. But of course, know the seller, etc., etc.

Nexus devices like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 get Android version updates from google and therefore have the latest version of google always. Unlike buying from a carrier like AT&T, Verizon, etc. You have to wait for the carrier to decide if they want to update the device and when.

wifi
Go to Settings and at the top is wifi. There you will see all the networks your phone detects. Select it and enter the password and you are using wifi just like a laptop. This goes for any wifi anywhere and your phone will remember a wifi if it has been on the wifi prior

Applications
play.google.com or the Amazon Android app store. Do NOT get apps anywhere else! Once you download from there, they will be in your app drawer and you use them from there or create a shortcut on the homescreen.

Honestly if you're that much out of the loop it would be very beneficial for you to visit a couple of stores and get some hands on time. Don't go by just what you're reading in here. I'm not saying the people in this forum will misinform you, i'm just saying go get some hands on time with several devices and then maybe come back and ask the pros and cons of each.

This.

If I was looking at new phones right now you'd have a hard time steering me away from the Galaxy S4. I *love* my Galaxy Nexus beyond words, but the S4 is the first one to come along to make me think twice about trading my GNex in.

But, the best advice you got on this thread is doing what Quick and Trophy suggested: go to a store and play. Then go back the next day and play some more. When you find "the one" it will scream at you. It always does for me.

Or that's the voices in my head acting up again. But I digress.

First, it would help to know what carrier you have or will use. Second, would be helpful to know what is most important to you...... Flex vs ease of use. Bigger better or easier to pocket........
