Help EVO V 4G Poor battery life/heat

Hey Guys,

I work a late night job and on my break, I use my phone and even with Battery Doctor, Juice Defender and System Panel PRO, the battery life is just lousy when I use the phone. Now some background on me, the place where I work has somewhat poor signal strength (1-3 bars at the most) and I do understand that it will use more of the battery in low-signal situations, but this thing is gobbling up 1-2 percent every minute, and I'm only doing things like reading e-mail, FB, reading the news and maybe a YouTube video, so is there some sort of black magic that can somehow fix this? I don't run Bluetooth, I turn the data off when I'm not using it, I keep my screen brightness extremely low all the time, and I make sure I don't overcharge my phone, so I don't know. But that leads me to another annoyance, when I use the phone, it gets friggin' hot, not scolding hot, but hot enough that it makes me think something weird is going on. I read that too much voltage might be going into the battery and that's possibly killing the battery, so since today's my off day, I completely drained the battery and I'm now charging it to 100% and monitoring the voltage as well as temperature.

I'll post screenshots of my battery usage and voltage at 100% later today.

Thanks.

Sounds like maybe a hardware issue.

The only time my phone has even become warm is one day when I left wifi tethering on and was walking around a metal building while my tablet was still in the car trying to hold on to a signal (it would have been going in/out over and over causing issues).

Personally I would try making sure all the updates are on the phone (go to settings > system updates > HTC software update).

Next, if that doesn't do anything, try a factory reset.

If that didn't work I would either return it for exchange if within 30 days or call VM to get it replaced under warranty if over 30 days.

The phone is up-to-date (4.0.3, Sense 3.6) and the phone itself is used so I performed a factory reset as soon as I got it, which also means I probably won't be able to replace it under warranty. I'm not able to upload screenshots for some reason, but when I started using it, it was around 80%, and when I was done, it dropped to somewhere between 25-35%, and that's just 90 minutes of use, so pretty annoying. On the other hand, I monitored the voltage and temperature while charging and it never got any warmer than 24 degrees Celsius, and voltage peaked at 4225mV, so we can probably rule that out, which is good.

Thanks!

Battery life on this phone is horrible. It's just a fact of life.

If battery is important to you, this phone certainly isn't up your alley.

Agreed, this phone's battery life is pretty bad. I leave for work at 5am and by 1ish pm I'm having to charge it. I tried different roms and kernels and they were about the same.

I ended up getting the Victory hopping for better battery and it's great.

Wow, according to you guys, I'm doing pretty damn good!

I leave for work at 8 PM, get home at 3 AM, Get up at 11 AM, which is the same time I usually charge my phone, and then at 8 PM, off to work again. The stock ICS battery meter says that I pulled off 21 hours, 45 minutes, and 7 seconds on my last charge and according to other sources, that's pretty average.

That's also with the stock battery. Just out of curiosity, how much do you get out of it? I don't really use my phone much during work, just on my two one hour breaks.

I used to get about 16 hours with my anker battery ,but if the battery is the issue I recommend you get an extended battery for it or get a second stock battery that way when your battery dies you can pop in a new battery :).

Or you can get a new phone. I have the Samsung galaxy s3 and it runs cooly all day on overheating problems and my phone last all day. Even then you can an extended battery for it

I was having the same issues and my phone is less than a year old. The signal at my house is all bars and it was still draining too fast. Contacted VM and told them its draining in less than 4 hours with little use. They sent me a new battery next day. This battery now lasts all day with average use. I don't even use juice defender any more.

You can try wakelock detector from the play store and see if an app is preventing the phone from entering deep sleep properly. :D
OB

I have similar problem. But after reboot, it went back to normal with drained battery.
Just to keep eye on it when it becomes hot.

For better battery life and performance, you might want to test drive the MiRaGe kernel for this phone. It works great with the stock rom. You can use FlashGUI to update the kernel if you're still S-ON, just follow the directions in the OP. I don't feel the need to use juicedefender anymore to help with battery life. The phone still gets warm when on wifi tether and when using google navigation but every phone I've had has been that way. Make sure to use the recommended settings: set governer to interactive and the I/O scheduler to row.

I am having the same problems. To those of you who got new batteries, did you have to send the old batteries back?

I keep 2 extended batteries on my plus the stock battery.. on some days, I'll go through all 3 batteries.. maybe everyone else is vastly better at conserving power on this phone..

I tried something billed as an extended battery that didn't make much of a difference. But then I got a Lithium-polymer battery (different and better technology) that's making a huge difference.

I think I'm still new enough that I can't post a hyperlink, but search Amazon for "Platinum Series - 2X Extended Life Lithium-Polymer Battery for HTC EVO 3D". It fits my HTC Evo V 4G. It will make your phone a little thicker (it includes a new back cover to accommodate the thickness), but I haven't found it to be a problem.

I have a Anker extended batteries they came as a combo deal 2 of them with a universal charger, i also b4 that one bought a huge azz extended batt that had its own cover that claimed it was 3000mAh , i think that lied. Or atleast looses its abilities to maintain that power cause now my Anker 1900mAh batteries last a hell of alot longer then the 3000 one that came with its own back cover, i realize u gotta look at the ratings on Amazon cause if u do that & read the comments ull avoid a crappy extended batt like i had got, but the Anker 1900 double pack with charger had high ratings & has 2 batts & allows u too still have a attractive phone without looking like a beast & it does a dang good job , it also can matter on which rom i use some are maxxed out thatll kill your battery faster then shiznits, but anyhow stock size fitting extended batt with good life & a extra batt to have charging for 20 bucks at the time i bought it

I got 3 of those 3500 mAh batteries.. they last longer than the stock battery but not twice as long..

I will sometimes go through 2 of these in a single day.
