Texting app without phone?

Is there a texting app that will work on the nexus 7 3g that does not require a phone to be connected? Thanks!

Thanks. I'm looking specifically for an app that will allow me to text with the nexus without the use of a mobile phone at all. Any thoughts on text plus or similar? Can't quite understand how they work, lol.

And that is what GO SMS does. You do however need a working SIM installed in you Nexus 7 3G.

I use the ATT sim that came with my nexus. I tried GoSms after first purchasing last winter and it didn't work at all. I can try again...

OK, I'm definitely missing something here because Go SMS Pro won't send texts from this nexus and I have 3g enabled...

Is there some setting I need to know about? Thanks!

i use Imessage...oh wait. nm. that's on my ipad ;) lol sorry i couldn't resist.

seriously tho is there not a way you can make google hangouts do this? also look into

desksms. it will forward your messages to your laptop or pc and then when you reply the recipient will get a message from your number.

I use Google Voice, you can text with that number. I also use GrooveIP for making phone calls with my Google Voice number. I know you need at least one existing phone number to use Google Voice, it needs it to forward calls.

I used Text+ on a Kindle Fire. As I recall, the app gives you a phone # to use to send texts. It worked, but I didn't like that I would have to let people know it was me, and thought it'd be confusing if they tried to call the number the texts came from.

Go SMS pro is just a replacement for your already texting app, it doesn't send texts via WiFi

Hey wire or text plus are the two you'd want to look into

I use pinger text free. Not sure if u need a number or not tho (I don't believe you do) but I know you get a real number to text with

EDIT: so text free isn't comparable with the n7 but it will work if you sideload it ;) and no u don't need a phone
EDIT2: here is the apk to sideload text free onto your nexus

I still can't figure out why Go SMS Pro will not work for me. I have 3g with an ATT sim card. Some people are using this Go SMS...how do you get it to work? Thanks for any help!

A bit of a late response but go sms isn't an over data/wifi texting app. It only works if you have a current texting plan.

The only thing it is, is a customizable sms replacement.

What your looking for is text plus/heywire/line/line2

Just set up Google Voice online and download both apps and you are set to go.
You don't need the Google Voice app installed, only an active Google Voice account set to forward to Google Chat (not your mobile#) and the GrooVe IP app.

have you tried Line2? I used to use Skype on their unlimited US calling plan along with Google Voice, then tried out Groove IP and loved it but Google pulled the plug on third party apps so its Hangouts or nothing. I've been trying out Line2 (free trial), way cheaper than other alternatives and $9.99/month is reasonable too. Solid app, needs MMS, but works on multiple devices, and is entirely VoIP. I think it has many other options like call forwarding and routing calls through your cell if needed but for me it gets the job done.
