Help New to S3 and have questions

I've just activated my new (Verizon) Galaxy S3 and I'm trying to get it set up. Ideally, I'd like it to look and feel like my Fascinate - we'll except for the slowness and lock-ups and stuff.

I have two questions so far (and there will probably be more on the way):

-- I want WiFi off. Period. Unless I deliberately go into the settings and turn it on for some odd reason. (Yes, I *am* a control freak!! Had a hard enough time going from my old Windows mobile phone/PDA to the Fascinate!) But it seems like eveery other program I open wants to search for an open WiFi network. And then when I open the settings, WiFi is back on! Is there any way I can prevent this automatic "search for WiFi"??

-- I dropped in my SD card frm the Fascinate, and now I have two storages: sdcard0, and extSdCard. My programs are getting confused. Is there an easy way to merge these into one and delete the other?

Ed

Sdcard0 is your internal storage; extsdcard is your removeable microSD card.
You can't install some programs on external media.

Under Settings - Wifi - uncheck the Notify Me box. That'll fix the first one.

Changing the look and feel to your previous phone is simple. just install one of the many launcher replacements found in the Play Store. if your device ran like Gingerbread or you had a custom launcher already there are many available to mimic it. it won't change your blue status bar icons to green, but it will be able to mimic the stock Android 2.3 launcher (ADW Launcher) or the more-stock Jelly Bean launcher (Nova Launcher/Nova Launcher Prime) vs. the stock setup on the GS3 which is TouchWiz.

-- WiFi notify is unchecked .... phone will not cooperate! Searched Play for a "no WiFi" app ... might try one of those.

-- "Look and feel" of this system's launcher is okay. I just meant getting my icons, widgets, and shortcuts back in the same places. Mostly that's happening. Got a surprise with a long press on the Home button. Is that just a history? Or are those all active screens? One widget on the Fascinate (and I think it's in the system not an app) allowed me to stop any running program. I like that!

-- Suddenly I have a blue half-circle on the left side that opens a list of other apps. Where's the setting to enable / disable this?

-- Keyboard is driving me nuts!! Buttons are too small. I see the numbers and punctuation on each key -- but there's no shift or fn to access them!

-- Where is the setting to make a web page fit the screen width in either orientation unless I override it and zoom in?

Thanks for all the help!!
Ed

Yes, that's programs that have been opened and are running in the background. Just hit clear all.

I think your half circle is the multi-window setting. Honestly, I'd download Nova Launcher to get rid of it and also to allow you to save your home screen setup for future use.

Hit the number key in the lower left hand corner to access the "shift" function. Or just hold on the key that has punctuation that you want; it should come up with a long press.

Check your internet app under Settings. You should be able to set your default zoom.

Got the multi-window sorted. Punctuation with a long press is kind of annoying; might just keep using the 123 key - just about as fast. Might try a different keyboard app, too. One that's kinder to fat-fingers! :8>) (I do wish we had a "delete" forward erase and not just a backspace erase!)

Toggle multiwindow by long pressing the back button
Dont download an app killer for the s3 btw, it really doesnt need one

Download the Google keyboard from the play store, turn off next word prediction, and you will have punctuation above the top row of letters

Can i ask a question about wifi . If you want it off its your device to do what you like . But wifi saves your data for when you really need it . And wifi is a faster dl. If you can get that wifi to connect keep it on save your data and you wont be paying for extra data or DATA CAP:eek::(

I do not have WiFi readily available in my normal locations. If I go somewhere particular that has WiFi and I want to use it, I can always turn it back on. But right now, I'd like to have control over whether that service spends my battery turning itself on and searching for networks.

(Nor do I want to discuss the actual battery usage for this -- control is the issue.)

Aha!! Found one of my apps (Sound Profile) that had a WiFi setting set to Yes. Changed setting to No Change - and bingo!!

Downloaded the Google keyboard -- looks like it's going to be a bit cleaner.

Appreciate the boost!

Sometimes wifi isnt faster. The LTE at work blows our wifi out of the water. :-)

I use SwiftKey and I have tried many keyboards. They are doing a 50 % sale right now. But you can try it out for 3 months for free also.
