Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

Hummm... guess you're right but I don't get why they'd do that Incredible would be the first to do so.

Believe me, I completely understand where your theory is coming from because it puzzles me as well.

Just for example, when the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro were released, the Diamond got 4GB internal storage w/o an expandable microSD slot. The Touch Pro got minimal internal storage w/ an expandable microSD slot up to 16GB.

But, going back to my original theory. If the Incredible has it, I have to believe the EVO will get it (if not more internal storage).

I did just look again, Bill, and I see that the official specs published by sprint show 65k colors, so I can't really argue with that. But if it is true (we'll have to wait and see, I think it's a typo) the EVO will have the crappiest looking screen on any android device when doing anything relating to photos or video. 65k might sound like a lot, but try switching your video card to that many colors and you'll be shocked at the banding and lines in color gradients you see everywhere. Considering that they're pushing the multimedia capabilities of this phone so much, I'd be shocked if the listed spec was true in the end. We'll see.
I can see why you think that, but everyone that has seen the EVO says the screen is amazing. My Hero has a TFT LCD Screen with 65k colors, but videos and even full feature movies I've added look great. They don't have the banding either, that you get on your computer screen with 65k colors.

Like you said, we'll have to wait and see on this one.

I'm going to repost this for people that got to the party late and may not have seen it back at the beginning of April.

On a different forum there was some insights posted from an Android engineer who was working with the Evo - when I asked him if it would be released the week of June 6th he said "sooner".

He posted pics of him holding the device, a sample picture he took with the Evo, and a bunch of other insights.

The posts I'm referencing start here: http://androidforums.com/htc-evo-4g/54768-official-sprint-htc-evo-4g-info-27.html#post508678

and here's the posting that Phandroid did summarizing all of the insights: HTC EVO 4G: Leaked Impressions, Coming Before June 6th?l | Android Phone Fans

So there is some credibility it would be released before June 6th. Hopefully we're safe that it at least shouldn't be any later than June 13th.

Forgive me if this has been asked before, I have read this entire thread but don't think I saw this. Do we know yet if the screen will be scratch resistant like the HD2? This video is pretty amazing:

YouTube - HTC TOUCH HD2 testing glass screen for scratch resistance

I ask because if it has the same protection as the hd2, I won't have to get a screen protector, which I have had bad luck with in the past. They usually decrease the touch screen ability, and after a month or two of going in and out of the pocket, the edges usually start to curl and get dust under it.

If this is true then I will not get a screen protector neither. It looks like the same coating as they have on the sprint hero. I would of liked the video better if he wiped it off with something other than his hand.

I thought the 65k colors spec for the hero was because it came out with android 1.5, which didn't yet support more color gradients like the droid and other more recent phones with 2.0+. ???

That's all pretty old news you're posting links to. People were hoping early this month that the one would come out early, but I think they had some issues. The consensus here pretty much is that Sprint won't release the phone until June 13th, but it's possible that Best Buy or Radio Shack could release it earlier.

That picture of the mouse is huge and now I have to scroll a lot to read the posts. Any chance you could re-size it to 640?

Might be, but my point is it looks good even if it is 65k. Based on what people are saying, everything should be fine, even if it is 65k. If we get something better, then great. I hope we do.

I haven't watched your movie yet, but the Hero has a similar screen to what the EVO's getting and it has scratch resistant glass. I've had the phone since October and the screen doesn't have a mark on it.

I also have the Hero and the screen is magnificent, I can actualy just wipe it on my jeans and it looks brand new. If the EVO has this screen it will be a big plus.

not sure if this has been posted yet but i figured id let you guys know i was on twitter and a sprint exec that i follow tweeted this Sprint | News Release
Thanks, (EVO)Lution. That was in the news today, but nothing about the NYC bash on May 12th. Maybe they're going to make their big splash in LA instead of NY and that means they might have to flip the switch on WiMAX in LA, if that's the case.

I would hope it comes with 16gb internal storage because of the HD. 8gb card holds only 2 hrs of HD Video. Jackson did say it might have more then the incredible

The only possible news I can think of with the LA thing is that maybe that's when they'll fire up the L.A. 4G network? Would be pretty nice for Sprint to brag that it turned on 4G coverage in New York and L.A. within the same week.

I specs I posted awhile ago are pretty much what is confirmed right now. Of course things can always change. I have to believe we'll know more soon.

Bill -
I don't have proof, but I can say with complete certainty that the 65k colors listed for the screen was carried over from the specs of the HD2 since it has the same screen, but that device having 65k colors is a limitation of windows mobile, not the screen itself. There is no inherent limit like that for a tft lcd, and since android supports millions of colors, I'm assuming the spec will be the same as the motorola droid which has a tft lcd, which is 16 million colors. Also, looks like you forgot to include the 8gb internal storage along with the 1gb rom and 8gb sd card. Good work, otherwise!

I believe it will be more than 65k colors. They have said it would support 720p and I believe part of the 720p spec is high def resolution? They frequently talk about high def content, so 65k would be a show stopper for high def. (IMO)

Bill, have a look at this video starting at the 2 min mark, it shows some issues with a 65k screen. Of course I will still buy the EVO if its screen only supports 65k colors, but it will be the biggest and maybe only flaw if it's true. It is definitely noticeable to someone like me with a discerning eye who actually deliberately looks for banding all the time when editing images (professional photographer/graphic designer).

It doesn't have 8GB of onboard ROM, first let me say ROM is not internal storage therefore it shouldn't be confused with internal storage space. Up to now there are 0 devices with 8GB of ROM which would be an absolute waste, it does however have 8GB of internal storage space.

The Incredible lacks an internal SD card slot reader which is replaced by internal storage.

please re-read what I wrote. I stated the Incredible has on board ROM *COMMA* 8 gigs of FLASH BASED memory...

I know they're distinctly different... That dead horse has already been beaten! :p

My opinion on the screen is as follows: Let's wait and see the screen before we try to make a judgement on it based upon 65k colors vs. 256k colors (just a fake example I thought of). Color and how things look displayed is SO subjective so to try to quantify it accurately seems pretty silly to me, especially as a pre-release judgement.

BUT

Here is some pics I found that give a little insight into the ordeal:
Sprint-HTC-EVO-4G-vs-HTC-HD2-And-Desire.jpg

Evo next to HD2. You can tell that the Evo is a little bit brighter, more vibrant and crisper (I dont think it is, but hopefully the HD2 is not in half-lit screen saver mode right before the display turns off)

Sprint-HTC-EVO-4G-vs-HTC-HD2-And-Desire-7.jpg

Just for some more comparison:
Evo next to Desire. You can tell that the Desire appears to have a brighter more vibrant display (partly becuase it has a color background vs. a black/grey one). Also desire has a AM-O-LED WVGA screen. It is brighter and vibrant, but looks a little off and washed in my opinion.

I don't want to continue the debate of which screens are better, and how many colors the device are going to come with - I am in the wait and see camp. These pictures, although preliminary, show us exactly what we are looking at without ambiguous numbers and specifications that are subjective.

Just my 2

Well, I don't see the banding on my phone with 65k like I would on a computer screen with only 65k. I worried about that when I got my Hero, but once I saw a movie play, my worries went away.

Norril mentioned that 720p would need more than 65k and that makes sense to me, but we don't any confirmation, so I'm going to leave it as is for now. Believe me, mogulust, I feel the same way you do.

Good post PyroSporker, I agree there's not much point in discussing/arguing it before it's released. It's just the first time I saw the 65k spec so it got me going trying to figure it out. A conclusive test would be if there was an hd2 next to an evo, with both showing a full screen vertical image of a gradient from black to medium/dark grey. The hd2 would show clear steps in the gradient and we'd be able to see how the EVO compared. Maybe self-praise could test this out if he has a unit on hand?

I find myself taking days at a time off from this thread now. nothing wrong with all of you or this thread, but am just sad nothing new and exciting is being published or leaked abouot the phone and release dates.

Fortunately my GFs Evo Jr. (Incredible) arrives in a week, so I can start playing with it. I may get one myself, just to play with until my Evo comes. I'll ebay the Incredible after.

On the video it says the screen is capable of 262K colors but Android 1.6 is limited to 65K so I will assume 2.1 will be able to handle more then 65K

Time flies and before you know it, it will be June.

Oh, and I noticed your absence. :)
