Root Welcome to Jelly Bean - Rooting

I'm trying to root a Reverb I got with JLB 4.1.2 ootb. I installed the Samsung drivers, got the SU and Busybox zip files onto my sd card by connecting the sd card to my computer and downloading it that way (not sure if that makes any kind of difference), got the device into Download mode, and now it's stuck on a screen that says "downloading ... do not turn off target!" and in small text in the corner says:

[ODIN3]
Product: SPH-M950
Version: M950VPBD6
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom

It' been on this screen for 25 minutes which is longer than I was expecting. Is something wrong? Should I just turn it off and start over?

I tried rooting this phone earlier with the wrong set of instructions, using poot.apk - the instructions were for the Reverb with ICS, and I can find them again if there's reason to think that might be causing problems.

I assume you pushed the tar using Odin. Once Odin is done disconnect the USB and pull the battery. Then reinsert the battery and boot to recovery.

Hope this helps.

Pulling the battery worked, thank ****. I think I made a mistake: I'm supposed to install Odin on my computer, and have my phone plugged in the whole time I'm rooting it?

Thanks so much for replying quickly!

You need Odin on your PC. Follow the steps in the OP. Once you boot to cwm recovery then install SU and busybox zip files (via recovery).

I'd like to root without a pc..... so if I understand this correctly..... an out of the box Reverb can be rooted with the same poot apk that my elite was rooted with. But, if I flash a JB Rom, or run the OTA update to JB.... I'll lose root and will not be able to root without a pc?

Poot will work only if it came with oob ICS and hasn't been updated, so yes.
But you're also not going to be able to install a custom recovery without a pc, though.

Last I checked, Poot was gone from the Google Play store. So unless there's an alternative download site...

Darn :(. That sucks. Sorda defeats the purpose. I wish another Android phone could push adb commands to the reverb

I am getting a push for another system update to my Reverb. I already have Jelly Bean. Anyone know what is in it and how stable it is?

When i pull the battery then boot into recovery its the stock recovery not CWM. The phone is fine but i dont know whats going on.

Are you using Odin to push the recovery from mrg666?

Ensure that you have auto reboot unselected. Let Odin fully complete then disconnect USB cord and pull battery.

Replace battery and boot directly to recovery.

If phone goes through or starts a normal boot then stock recovery will overwrite CWM.

Hope this info helps

What's mrg666? And when I try to boot into recovery it won't let me. I press volume up, power and home. This works if I try before I flash the
.tar .

What's mrg666?
It's a custom kernel made by mrg666.

EDIT: ^^^ That was a wrong answer. bkttk2 was talking about the CWMT-6.0.3.6 recovery made by mrg666. Sorry about that.

Try to pull the battery again as soon as you see the yellow triangle. That worked for me.
