Help Speed up GPS sync?

Hello

I'd like to get started contributing to OpenStreetMap using my Galaxy Nexus running the stock 4.2.1 (JOP40D.I9250XWMA2).

I keep the GPS feature disabled because it drains the battery, but it can take several minutes to sync up while in the city before I can take a picture and have it tagged with the location

What could I try to speed things up? Connect an external (A)GPS chip through the USB port? Move to CyanogenMod?

Thank you.

1) have wifi on when you are trying to use GPS. Even if you are not connected to a wifi network

2) having GPS turned on does not mean it is in use and therefore does not mean it drains your battery. You are simply enabling the GPS antennae to be used by an app by having it turned on. If you don't see an icon in the notification area that your GPS is being used, the battery drain from GPS will be minimal or non-existent. (If you see the GPS icon turn on in the Notification area when you don't think you are using it - there is an app using your GPS without your expressed permission

3) Things seem to work better more often after installing this:
Make sure you do: Settings > Tools > Manage A GPS > Reset and then Settings > Tools > Manage A GPS > Download

Thanks for the info. I'll experiment with leaving the GPS on and enabling wifi when I need to take a picture of a location, and see how fast it works.

I installed GPS Status, configured it accordingly, and will report back in a couple of days.

Thanks for the info. I might move to CyanogenMod if I can figure out 1) what the consequences are (lose all data? Must reinstall all applications? Other?), and 2) how to do it (Stuck at Fastboot mode).

If you follow all the directions on their site you should be fine. It tells you to use backup so you don't lose everything.
