Root Certain apps un-updatable in certain ROMs.

I'm trying to drill down why this is so, but much more importantly I'd like to fix this problem.

The situation: I've been a longtime user of the Katana ROM as it has been both stable, fast, and good for battery longevity in my experience, even with the OC/1.67 kernel installed. I really like this ROM and have tried the others that GT made, but all of them have the same problem.

The problem: I first noticed this with the Google/Android Keyboard, later I noticed it with the Gmail app. These apps are not updatable in these ROMs. The Android Keyboard for quite some time was the same version that was available at the Play store, but it is now at least one version newer. When attempting to update this app, the Play store politely tells you that the file was not signed properly, to uninstall the old version and then reinstall the new one. The same issue pops up with the Gmail app; in Katana, the Gmail app is the one made before the summer update, and it has no tabs for categories. This is a feature I find immensely useful in order to actually manage email on my phone so I'd love to use it, but the same problem occurs. Side-note: Samurai has the updated, tabbed Gmail app, but Samurai appears to drain my battery rather quickly. I haven't attempted to update its Gmail app, but its Android Keyboard does not update with the same error as the Katana rom gives.

I have tried various suggestions in other threads to fix this problem: uninstall the offending app, delete cache, then attempt to reinstall. I have removed the apps through the app manager as well as Titanium Backup. I have tried to reinstall with both the Play Store downloaded versions and with apks that I have grabbed from other sources. In each case (Gmail and Android Keyboard) the install fails. Is there anything else I can try to drill this down? If I could just get the Gmail app updated through Katana, I'd be thrilled at this point.

My keyboard also won't update. I had to unfreeze it to test but I'm getting the same error. I have been running the blacked out Gmail so I can't really test that. The blacked out version is up to date I believe. I know it has those awful labels they recently came up with.

Here flash this in recovery. Its the new gmail. gmail.zip . You will probably have to view the site as desktop then click file in the top left corner and then download.

I don't think you can update the keyboard. I think it's because GT got a leaked pre- release version.

i uninstalled the default keyboard using ES file explorer once i got rid of it i installed google keyboard. I have been able to updated it ever since. Most likely that is your problem. do no t freeze the app, get rid of it completely then re install from the market.

Speaking of Swype, my "beta" trial finally ended now that Swype is officially in the play store. I paid $1 to get it back, crappy part is the beta dictionary didn't carry over to new official play store app, so I'm teaching Swype all my lingo all over again =/

If you want all the bells and whistles just keep your phone stock with no custom roms... Just sayin.

It's nice to know we can count on you for your assistance? And truly a bizarre insight to a ROM modder's mind who feels updates of basic apps are "bells and whistles"?

Seems your reaction to  is to to think this is a complaint I have. I'm not complaining. I've come here for some insight as to how to solve this problem. Nothing anybody has suggested previously when I've asked has helped. CM10, incomplete as it is, does not even have this issue, and two ROMs that you made exhibit the same issue with different apps (Katana with both gmail and the keyboard, Samurai with just the keyboard), so it would seem something that you have done expressly, perhaps without even knowing, has caused this problem. If you aren't interested in helping me figure it out, you could always say just that, but please don't pretend that anybody who wants workable updates to simple app functionality should stick with an entirely stock ROM. There is no reason to have to choose to deal with MyMetro, only in order to get functional updates from completely different apps.

At least, there sure shouldn't be a reason to have to make that choice. I never would have imagined that a ROM creator would even ask somebody to just deal with it, not after all the care you've put into everything you have made available on this board.

Thanks. I'll give that a go.

It seems likely that it has something to do with the way that these apps are hooked in. At least, that is what I suspect, if both ROMs have the same version keyboard then I guess the leak is certainly a possibility.

It seems you think I have an obligation to provide you with the ideal rom for your use, well you're absolutely wrong. I made these roms for my own personal use and decided to share them with everyone. I've made roms for three other phones (ascend, galaxy s2, esteem) which I never shared, but finally decided to with the spirit which I don't know why I bothered being that it's more work on myself. I did this on my own time free of charge with nothing to gain. You're by no means forced to keep any of these roms installed. If you're not satisfied with the rom, simply remove it and flash another rom made by someone else or go back to stock rom which works just fine.

And I'm not pretending at all. Being that these roms are not products that I sold to you at a price they don't obligate me to you, and then yes... I can tell you that if none of the suggestions have worked for you and you want "workable updates" like you said then you'll have to deal with the stock rom which is what you actually paid for.

If none of the suggestions that been given work for you, these are your options...

1. Compromise and deal with the rom as is
2. Flash another rom from someone else
3. Go back to stock rom that you actually paid for and works just fine

If it was me, I'd go with option three and just have stock rom rooted. However, myself and others have updated these apps with suggestions already made to you.

Basically the ROM's have versions of these apps that have been modded and signed by someone other than Google. If you delete the gmail app in /system/app folder, reboot into cwm, clear cache and dalvik, you should then be able to install gmail from the market. But you might have to delete the associated lib files as well. I know to fix the keyboard you have to delete the lib files but I'm not sure which are for what program.

Maybe the problem is with your google account , GTs stuff is always great . He shouldn't have even had to reply to you . Yet he did and you argue with him . You sir are either drunk hi and on medication or you simply have very little respect . This guy right here is one of a kind , nothing but love is what he shows us . You should ask your self each time you turn on your phone , where would i be without this .

+1
Same here, but I like to add that I had to wipe cache and dalvik after removing old version to then install new one.
Yea but does it show the words as you swipe.
Yeah it's been working for me 100%, but only after wiping cache and dalvik before installing new keyboard.

Yep. Those apps are from team Blackout and for me it was as simple as removing them with root explorer then wiping cache and dalvik and then installing the new ones including the keyboard(without messing with libs) which has already been suggested to him, but he said that didn't work which is why I suggested for him to stick with stock rom.

Thanks bud. No sweat though, no harm done. ;)

I never had a problem with the keyboard so I never thought to update it. I just like how the words pop up. The only problem I've had with spirit is how LG themed it.

I don't even use the stock apps with these roms, well any rom to be exact. I've ALWAYS used secondary market apps for just about everything, phone/contacts/texts/home/keyboard/ect. you name it and it's replaced pretty much, lol. Ever since my first android the Huawei ascend, lmao! GT, I gots nothing but love for ya homie. I might try a new battery too and see how that works, I have put this battery through Hell..

Or we can tweak it ourselves and uninstall your themed apps (that's why they don't update) and install them/update right only thing I've changed on your ROMs is some apps

Obviously, but he says he's not able to update with the suggestions made to him.
