Root [Virgin Mobile] Working 4G on Sprint ROMs

Sprint JZ054K.710VPMD4... I broke 4G a while ago, and just stayed with a sprint version because it seems much faster.

Can you link me to the thread you downloaded it from please? Ill need to look at it.

Pimp'n my own here - did you try my new ROM yet? I also added 2 additional themes to choose form (Sense or Xperia)

you should be able to use my 4g boost apn... things will need to be modified of course. use an apn backup program on stock to get the right values for things like where mine says boost.pamsn or whatever. theres also an n.boost.ispsn i think that will need adjusting. dont touch the mcc or mnc and you may need to modify the buildprop. set default network mode to 9 or maybe 8 and enable lte on cdma

oh and the mmsc will need to be changed as well

my zte aurora (boost force) repo has everything to make boost lte and mms work and virgin should be no different

I honestly think apn settings alone is a shot in the dark. May work for some.

I think it's a combo of kernel / apn setting / and build.prop entries.

Take my TW MG2 ROM.

When I was able to flash and get a Sprint kernel to boot I lost LTE (4g). APN edits did nothing for me. I ended up making a build.prop edit with stock APNs to get it to work.

Virgin Mobile uses a system called chameleon to work on Sprint towers. I'm not sure how it works to be honest. The cdma entries in our Stock ROMs point to its use. Also there is the chameleon apk in /system/app.

Sprint based kernels on Virgin Mobile phones doesn't play nice with Chameleon. I had to force Virgin Mobile ID entries (removing chameleon from build.prop) to get the Sprint kernel to work on Virgin Mobile with LTE.

You flash an unedited Sprint ROM then everything points to sprint specific settings. The phone says it's a Sprint phone trying to operate on Virgin Mobile accounts on Sprint towers. No wonder it's a mess.

You need the Sprint ROM on our phones to identify itself as a virgin mobile phone, with Virgin Mobile apns and Virgin Mobile ID numbers.

I'm pretty sure they're Phone is literally identical to ours. They have the same OTA with mg2 and they used our thread to install cm

i havent flashed a sprint ROM yet but anyone who wants 4g should read what they did

they just reported that turning wifi off and then on will lose all data connections untill u reboot

Can you tell us how you got 4g working?

I changed the apn config file with one from the stock rooted rom. I also changed the files in the firmware folder with the ones from the stock rom. I basically ported the rom with the normal files you would exchange. I don't know where else apns are in the rom and I don;t know how to edit the secmms apk. but if i get the devs permission I will post what I have worked on so far.

Also when I flashed the rom I didn't flash a kernel. I kept the stock kernel and it worked fine.

boost uses chameleon... and we have 4g even on the zte force cm10 with the same custom kernel code that works for the sprint version of the phone. kernel should only matter if the hardware differs

The chameleon is a mystery for me. I downloaded your CM10 force and took a look. I see what you did with the apns-conf file and Ill try to adapt to ours.

Im wondering how / why there isn't any build.prop edits?

Your build prop carrier states:
#ro.carrier=sprint
ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric=310120
ro.cdma.home.operator.alpha=Sprint

Yet 4G / LTE works without changing it to the Boost settings? I know its not our phones but I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622055

Ill tinker bit to see whats up. One thing I forgot was after editing the apns file I may want to delete the telephony.db to force a rebuild of providers.

I found a way to gain access to 4g apn using launcher pro & the activities widget.. I'm not sure if this helps. I'm going to mess with it later.

i was experimenting thats why certain things were commented out. it seems that the phone pretty well knows its on the sprint network. i had done alot of buildprop stuff to try to fix it in the first place but in the end it was the apns that got it going. should just need to adjust your proxy, replace things like n.boost.ispsn, and change the mms address for an aosp rom. an actual sprint rom may ba a tiny bit more involved but an apn backup tool should get the settings necessary for aosp and give you a valid backup to be used in the sprint roms

Sounds good. I'll tinker with it. Thanks

Based on junkie2100's work I may have a universal LTE/MMS flashable fix for our phones. (TW and CM versions)

Dont hold your breath yet - testing now.
