Help Please help! Screen won't turn on during call .. This is killing me!

Just as the title states..

I've been using Jelly Beans ROM for, what seems like forever, on my Galaxy Note 2. In fact, I think I was using a very old build way back to B8 (Now at B22). However, I haven't done anything to my phone since B8, I've just been using it for texting, phone calls, and web browsing.

All of a sudden, my screen no longer comes on when a call is ongoing.

This, of course, SUCKS! This means I can't dial extensions, I can't "Press 1 for English", and, if I get a voicemail, I cannot hang up the phone without pulling the battery!

I tried updating the rom to the newest build, still hasn't helped.

Any ideas? Those standard Galaxy Note 2 diagnostic things don't work in the phone pad, probably because I'm rooted, so I can't diagnose the sensor.

Have you tried hitting the power button to get the screen back? (The proximity detector locks the screen when it's by your face, so you don't "cheek dial".)

In settings, I think in display, unselect the sensor. Hmm let me check quickly because I had the same problem where even the power button wouldn't wake the screen but I fixed it. Brb.

Settings>Call>Proximity Sensor > Disable (deselect)

And Settings>Call>Power Button ends call.

You may not want or need to do that second step.

Power button doesn't do anything.

Settings>Call>Proximity Sensor > Disable (deselect)

And Settings>Call>Power Button ends call.

You may not want or need to do that second step.

I guess because I'm rooted, my settings are different because there is no option in Settings labeled "Call"


..Also, I just updated to Jelly Beans B22, still doesn't work so it's definitely hardware issue.

I think the only way to know for sure is to go back to stock and test it.

It's funny, but I had the same problem and it drove me up the wall. I was convinced it was my ROM, Kernel, etc. and in the end I flashed several different ROMs right back to a JB 4.1.2 stock ROM - no change, I still couldn't end the call, the screen simply was black and I had press and hold the power button until the phone rebooted.

In the end I looked at the proximity sensor next to the speaker and I saw a speck of dust in front of the sensor, which was wedged between my glass screen protector (do you have a screen protector?). I slightly pulled the screen protector away from the screen, blew the dust speck away and, hey presto, haven't had a problem since.

I would say from your description that it seems the proximity sensor. Either it is dirty or faulty. I hope it's the former.

Yes that is my fear. I do have a screen protector - PhantomSkinz, but it doesn't cover the sensor, and I've cleaned that spot ... so ... I believe it is faulty.

I wonder if a hardware defect would be covered to be fixed even if I am rooted? I may have to go into the store and see.

The call settings are in the dialer menu. Click on the dialer, then click on menu, call settings and that is where you will find auto screen off during call.

I second the above post about going back to stock and testing it. I had this problem on another phone (except the screen came on but the touch-interface didn't --- only way to interact with a call was to use bluetooth) I tried everything I could and it never worked, I went back to stock and that fixed it.

On that note, can you still interact normally with bluetooth? have you tried using video-out during a call? (dont know if that works or not, just thinking it could be a driver issue causing the physical screen not to turn on, but the video-out might work --- purely troubleshooting, I know it's extremely impractical)
