Volume control

You can pull down the notification bar and the volume bar is there. No need for a separate app if don't want to use the rocker on the back.

Who's your carrier? I'm on VZW and unless I'm missing a setting, I do not have that option in my notification bar.

I've seen it once on the VZW version. I believe I had just exited a game or Google Music or something. I certainly haven't seen it regularly, nor do I have any explanation for when it shows up.

I have noticed that when playing music or watching YouTube the bar appears in the pull down. You can then swipe to remove.

Yep, I see that now too. So I guess they made it persistent on all but vzw phones. Okay, I might prefer that more I think about it. Always nice to have a choice though.

I do wish it was a setting to always show, only in use or never.

All things being equal, I agree with you that the VZ variable may be the preferred method.
