Root Porting ClockWorkMod to the Kyocera Rise

From some ppl who had this they had the boot loader unlocked then when it updated that's when it locked. So if we can downgrade it may make things better for us

I had my phone in December 2012, actually. Ditched it in March 2013, sold it for what I paid.

That's when I bought mine, too. Managed to brick mine at the end of September, then bought an Event to replace it. The Event actually runs better for me than the Rise ever did. It still has some of the same problems that I came across when using the Rise, like the facebook app crashing even when I'm not using it. I just link to the browser page of that site (using Chrome... could never get that to work on the Rise ) + a few other social media sites instead of using their apps. That saves a lot of system RAM in my case.

Otherwise I actually don't miss the Rise anymore. I hope that the petition that one guy made about unlocking the boot loader of this phone, and similar models works out for the devs that want to make custom roms for these phones.

That makes sense. The update consists of an update to amss.mbn and the system files. If the amss was patched to have the locked bootloader, that sucks. We should try to get a copy of the pre 4.0.4 amss.mbn if that's the case.

I have an Event as well (not my daily driver, but it will be soon. My Rise is still my daily driver). I got it to test out the bootloader/fastboot stuff, and I love it. It's like a Rise/Hydro with more storage space. Since it doesn't have the waterproof stuff or the keyboard, it's pretty dang light too.

mhmm but only problem is that idk if anyone has this file anymore due to the 4.0.4 firmware. if anyone does can we use that in place of the 4.0.4 amss.mbn or can we decompile this to zero in on the patch

Well even with the 'unlocked' bootloader, you still can't flash custom images, you can only temporarily boot them.

hmm. kyocera is smart but not smart enough. i want to ask something. since kyocera can update our phones, can we find a way to use that to our advantage like hijack how it updates and write our own update to the phone?

as of now nope. its a shame that we cant boot a custom recovery without the bootloader being locked. wait, how big is our recovery file?

Guys telus bought pm!!!!! Telus doesnt have locked bootloaders!!! Do you know what this could mean!!!! Or at least roll an update to work on their network some how, and we can steal the sig

are our phones proprietary or not. if so i looked into a software called replicant os. i hope we can use that for something

Where is it said that they don't have locked bootloaders? I couldn't find anything about it.

And this is why the C5156 is so different. It had to be heavily modded
"We could either get it at the next spectrum auction, or buy you." I lol'd.

Also, it's not THAT different, at least software wise. Hardware, I'm not sure. The partition layout is almost identical, and the boot/recovery images work fine on other Rises.

Probably should have been more clear. Out of experience, telus is ok with custom roms (they obviously havent requested them to be locked like PM did. Either way, they will probably roll an update for some reason, at least to the c5156

Some of the rise images on my compilation page are from 4.0.3 based firmwares. Now I would't suggest flashing them to a different phone but it might have insight into how we maybe could inject the same unlock that was in the older firmwares.

Also, the carriers pretty much don't deal with the firmware, at least on a per-model level. They each have their own sometimes good but often bad mods for android (good being like the t mobile theming engine bad like bloat apps and backgrounds) but they don't really do much for the android sofware at all, and in the end, it's kyocera that loads the phone with the software, and it's kyocera that compiles the roms/kernels in the first place.

Why don't they just unlock the bootloader, I mean it would make them look like the good guys to the consumers and might sway their next purchasing decision? Because kyocera doesn't sell the phones to the consumer, that's Virgin Mobile/Sprint/PM's job. If they don't like the phone and it's software, it doesn't get put on that carrier (specifically the locked bootloaders but this is one of the reasons android phones don't usually have stock root methods in the first place as well, it's not new). So the manufacturers are sorta at the mercy of the carriers. Some big names, like Samsung and HTC have enough pull on the market that they can just unlock phones and the carrier can't do a ton about it... but smaller manufactures like kyocera don't have that luxury.

To customer support, unlocked phones is a no-no, to them it means putting a phone on the carrier that was not made for that carrier (e.g. flashing ESN). They often get confused when what you actually mean is unlocked bootloader, which is sorta something that the community dubbed it, like jailbreaking. But if they know that what you want is something beyond root, well that's also a no-no, cause you are not supposed to root your phone either.

If I was to pick who I would complain to, it would be kyocera no matter what their support techs tell you, it's a sad situation that they are in, but they are the only ones that really know whats needed to unlock the bootloader. And, as far as I know, I don't think you breached any contract you had with them (if any) by rooting the phone

so 4.0.3 is on here but for which carrier? and is it possible to flash these firmwares on these phones via dd or adb? if so well will it cause a brick or will it actually succeed?

Well, I would say there is a better chance that it would brick than succeed. But there is still a chance either way, no real way of knowing unless you use DD to flash it, which I would NOT suggest doing. I would prefer to compare it with the newer firmware to see what changed, see if it's something simple or complex as it might give good insight for somebody looking to make an exploit for the device

interesting. if 4.0.4 is also on here for vm rise i can compare the both of them to see if any values have changed between the both of them. that may be our only hope and clue for this phone

aside from my post, i seen for some devices that theres a kernel built within the recovery. is it possible to build our recovery with a kernel? that could be why the custom recovery isnt booting. i seen other devs build a recovery for this phone. now it isnt booting for some unknown reason. could it be that it needs a kernel for it to boot up? call it a hunch but i think we might need to build a recovery with a kernel inside the recovery. it might be that itself.

That's not the problem. We DO have a recovery that boots, so long as the recovery can be 'unlocked'. Currently, only the Public Mobile and Sprint versions of the Rise are able to 'unlock' the bootloader. Keep in mind that it isn't a true unlock either. Also, the recovery does have a kernel in it.

thats good to hear. and thanks. well with virgin mobile rise its out of reach. do you think we can ask them to give us an update for fastboot to be enabled again. they dont care on root otherwise they'd done something about it by now. well lets say kyocera made virgin mobile send an update to disable that in our phones. can we find some way to undo the changes to these phones
