Root Telus Hero - Failing at Downgrading with goldcard

So like everybody else I decided to try and root to install a custom 2.1 rom on my Telus HTC Hero running firmware 1.5 (build 2.73.661.46 CL#74632 release-keys), but I'm failing miserably! I'm following the goldcard method to downgrade before rooting but every time I create a gold card it fails. I remove the card and either insert it into the phone or PC and both tell me it's unrecognised and needs formatting.

I've tried 4 different micro SD cards (stock 2GB, class 4 4GB, class 4 8GB, generic 2GB) all with the same result. Is this because I'm running Windows Vista or Windows 7 (I get the same result on two different laptops)? If I install XP will I have more luck? Or do I just need to keep spending yet more cash on unneeded micro SD cards? Or just keep trying with the same cards over and over agian? Failing that, I'll buy a prepared goldcard if anybody has a spare one lying around?

Any suggestions welcome... :(
 
I know it sounds stupid and im going to look like an idiot for admitting this, but are you 100% sure your clicking on physical disks when loading the disk because i tried 4 times on 4 different cards and when i was going out to the shop i was on my phone and reading that someone else had done this and were clicking logical disks instead of physical disks and i came home and first try, Bam it worked perfectly
 
It's GSM, with a removable sim card. I've already unlocked it from Telus.

YES! I think I was clicking logical disks... that didn't even cross my mind! I'll try it when I get home from work....!

OK, I can create the goldcard OK, but I get this when running the downgrade tool:

RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_1.76.405.1_R3_WWE_release_signed_NoDriver

Downgraded, on to custom ROM installation!

Thanks for the tip! I think you saved me another 2 or 3 micro SD card purchases before I gave up!
