I hate Google pestering me

Probably not so much a cell phone as a GPS tracker. Just think of all the ads for local merchandise you can receive. It probably can be done subliminally.

Not every stupid idea is a new way for the dark evil forces of Google to secretly spy on you.

Why is nearly every new subject about tracking you, even when it's not?

Isn't a tattoo microphone stupid enough for you??

Besides, they won't use GPS with this to track you.

The ink is going to be magnetoresonant as well as dayglo, so it's going to be easy to use video surveillance as well as magnetometers to track you.

It isn't the tracking, it's the pestering it can enable.
Reputation Economics: Privacy isn’t a right. It’s a commodity.

I went into a hobby shop today, and instead of pestering for a zip code, they wanted an email. Told them NO. I don't give a RA if an email is from the powers that be or the president of the US, if I don't want it, it's SPAM.
I'd give them a throwaway where everything is marked as spam and autodelete.

I don't want to have to turn off my phone every time I go into a store since the thing is constantly bombarding me with crap for products I neither use nor want. I would suppose this falls under the same restrictions as the DNC. If you have done business with the store, they have a right to bug you. I say they don't and when I see a good blocking app for pests, then I'll shut up. You can block ads, email, but short codes are a bit harder.

BTW, I do read TOS.

Blocking short codes is easy My call/messaging blocking app handles it all quite well.

Trouble is, they gotta call you first to get a number to block.

It will get like phone spam - get called, caller hangs up - search the number and the consensus is it's a spammer checking for live numbers.

It isn't just Google. It's local stores. I refuse to support the local economy since no one here carries what I do want. I've been called Un-American for not liking movies by a Comcast or whoever they were at the time. We still don't have cable or satellite.

These idiots kept pestering and calling when I was trying to get the baby to sleep. Or they would knock at your door. I went on a vendetta against these pests years ago, long before Google. Since this town doesn't have much to offer, I won't support it. They get taxes. That's why something like whatever Google has about social life, movies and food in town isn't wanted.

Companies that sell astronomical equipment usually don't run advertising campaigns, the local fabric stores don't, and as for sewing machines - if you want a TOL, the stores all carry the same blurbs from the MFG. You are not allowed to price online.
I don't care about getting a new car, I've got a pickup I like, has good gas mileage, and I can't see getting rid of it until it falls apart. We had a running '75 Opel Manta for almost 40 years. (couldn't get parts} I don't follow fashion, so I don't care who is offering what in the latest style. If I want something in particular, I'll design it myself.
Not a foodie, haven't stepped into a movie theater in over 25 years, so what's left to advertise? That's why almost every ad is a pest.

I have my desktop computers built, the laptop is usually a reconditioned one running the OS I want. Since I have legacy programs, I have offline XP. They only get flash upgrades.

If I want a new phone, I come over here to see what's new and if I want it. The3 qualifications are fast processor and storage and can it be rooted to run they way I want. I don't give a RA if it has LTE or not. I use my wifi, and anything I do online outside of the house is usually a lookup for info. I do read TOS.

What I really resent about this is the trend of giving up all info just for convenience.
It will get to the point where you will have to sign your kid up for a "network" at birth, you can be denied a job either due to FB or not having FB. If medical providers get every lookup on web MD, they can deny or up your insurance. I feel this is dangerous to any individual preferences. Apple fans get called iSheep, but the fans of all the mod cons aren't much better. The FB part is already happening. There are suits about giving or not giving your password to employer.

I don't want the "It's free" argument, either. It's long-term consequences.

There's another pest - "It's free, try it" I don't happen to want it. Keep bugging me and you will be told it's a POS!

Aside from certain basic rules, I don't live the way everyone else does. I got some sarcastic answers here since I do have a usually TOL phone, and use it as a PDA.
My phone, my preference, and so far TMO doesn't care.

Maybe you're not in the right demographic or area? I do see companies trying to sell me sewing machines and other machinery for apparel production, construction cranes, various items of dental and orthodontic equipment like dental drills, 3D printers and 3D scanners, $100,000 medical YAG lasers for tattoo removal(I had to actually look up what a "Conbio MedLite C6" was), and this ads I've seen on Android Forums. LOL. I was blocking ads for a while, but decided not to for the moment because I'm finding them interesting....the rate things are going, never know I might see an ad for astronomical equipment, probably at astronomical prices as well. :D

I don't do the ads. If I like a company, I do newsletters. I get newsletters from Orion, OPT and a few others.

You also don't see ads featuring prices to sell high end cameras, either. For those, you go through a dealer, and the dealer runs the mfg's ad.
I've seen ads for Nikon, but it was for a small mirrorless, or one that had Android.Have yet to see an ad for a DSLR. The Canon ads are for printers.

You know you can turn off tracking on any phone with JB. Open the Google Settings app / Location. I leave Location Access checked so apps can use the GPS, WiFi, and Carrier info. I turn off Location Reporting and Location History under my primary Gmail account. To confirm they are/are not tracking you goto https://maps.google.com/locationhistory. I turn off Android Device Manager in the Google Settings app also, but that's more of a battery saving issue than paranoia.

I think web tracking is worse than actual GPS tracking. I wish they would discard web search events after a short time. I looked up info on The Biltmore in NC the first week of September before a DC trip and I am STILL seeing ads for The Biltmore on various pages.

I do have it turned off. Phone is rooted, maps has been deleted and location frozen by TB. I have no need for maps. I can get between here and Moab without a map. If I need one locally for a new business, there is Mapquest on the pc. I can PRINT out the directions and read them when I need them. I don't need turn by turn. All I need is the name of the street before the one I want and right or left turn.

I do use the GPS for Skeye, Sky Safari, Mobile Observatory, and Vortex.

These issues are clearly important to you.

If you want to share them easily, how about a link to this thread in your sig?

You can change the title by editing the first post and choosing Advanced if this one doesn't suit you.

Then if you're discussing something elsewhere, and in your opinion it relates to this stuff, talk about the main topic first and then say something like, "I also think this relates to the link in my sig."

And your sig can contain whatever short description to clarify the importance, etc etc.

And update this thread with the issues as they evolve.

:)

What's a link in a sig look like?
I know what a link is, I know what a sig is - it's the combination and what's legal to post that I'm not sure about.

I've tried fixing a title using advanced, usually a mistype, and I can't. Could be the way I use the computer. I love NoScript.

You could try disabling NoScript for just androidforums.com where the important stuff is, but keep it enabled for things like google-analytics.com or googleadservices.com or whatever other third-parties that are running scripts via this site. And that should allow things like advanced editing and posting to work properly, while not being tracked and/or seeing ads by Google.

Vigilink, Amazonaws, and Ajax. googleapis? I also use private browsing and dump everything when I close FX. If I'm using Iron, I delete history and cookies at close.
Also use incognito for that.

It's just my method of getting even for excess pest and noise. That way it only applies to me. Not like setting up a DDOS attack that would affect everyone else. You people have a right to enjoy the forum in your own way.

Here's one post about a possible outcome for all these "want to be everything to everyone" sites:

Linkedin integrates Pulse and upsets almost everyone- The Inquirer

And another which no one seems to care about:

Look at how many ways we ruin your life, Redmond boasts

I did get a phone just to deal with my boss, but his calls were usually that he forgot the combination to the garage door opener, or what file format. Just quickies.
If he did need me, he'd ask if it was convenient to come by the office. I wasn't expected to do work at home unless it was a design that I had the programs for and work didn't. I got compensated.

Yup you can kill all those with NoScript as well, and just have the main androidforums.com javascripting enabled. Which will enable the site to function correctly for things like advanced posting. Same thing for other sites as well of course.

Wow, that's complicated.

Links and sigs can look like most anything, we're really flexible.

You can set and tinker with it here - http://androidforums.com/profile.php?do=editsignature

If you use our phone app and say no signature in preferences your posts will just use your sig set here rather than the app.

Sigs appear once per page on threads.

If you like and it's easier, let us know what you'd like for the thread title and signature. Mike or I can change the title, I can set up your sig.

Happy to help! :)

What does a link look like in a sig? I like "sent by UFO" can I add to that? And what do I add, will it link with a copy and paste of title? I'd rather change the title from tracking to pestering.

They did pester at one time on Play. Had a big signup menu for + and you couldn't get to "log out"
I did have a Voice number and Google asked why I never used it. I deleted it.
Viber goes to the UK, Voice doesn't.

Thanks for changing the title. I can't do much about the tracking, but can complain about pests.

Your sig does NOT appear in this section of the forum. I don't remember having seen any links, just reminders.

All that appears is LIKE on the left.

I often don't use my sig. I didn't in this thread.

It appears in the post linked.

It may not appear for you because Javascript is required, it's how we control it appearing once per page on multi page threads.

Very few turn that off, so your message will get out there.

I hate it when Google Rewards sends me a survey and I open it. I find out that the survey's for some product or service I've never heard of or used. Then the survey ends and I only get $0.25 out of the deal. What's up with that! It makes me feel lame that I don't know what airbnb is.
