'fined' for negative online review

I would go out of my way to uncover any personal information about people at this company and spread it all throughout the internet. Anything to ruin their lives.

You know that most of people are just an employees who had nothing to do with it. Are you gonna go after forklift driver, releasing his personal info on the Internet?
 
This is bad precedent for any business. In order to better serve their customers, they must be willing to hear negative reviews as well as positive. Criticism is an opportunity for greatness.

While I sometimes get a little unnerved about reading bad reviews on Yelp for restaurants I work for, they can often be helpful in solving problems; be it food or service or whatever.

Yeah, I agree, sometimes complaints can be pretty petty I've seen those complaints and some people can be pretty bratty (like the ones where the service was 30 seconds too slow or one olive too few in the salad). Legitmate complaints on products and services should always be welcome.

More importantly, it should be brought up with the manager on duty, or failing that a phone call or email to the restaurant. Give the place a chance to win that customer back over rather than just ranting.

That's why I not only look at the ratio of negative to positive reviews, but the content. My wife and I went out for our anniversary and the reviews all agreed the food was fantastic but the services was problematic (at least in the negative reviews.) As it turned out, the restaurant didn't rush you though the meal so there were periods when you didn't see staff. This is exactly what we were looking for so we could have a leisurely and intimate meal rather than have a server hovering over us waiting to whisk away the plates.

Tech reviews, too suffer from this. 9 times out of ten the negativity comes from the customer not bothering to read about prerequisites, return policies, etc, or just being too dense to set up the thing properly.
 
Policies like that should be illegal. (never mind the rumor that the policy wasnt even in place when the woman made the purchase). Businesses are protected from false reviews by Libel laws. It's crystal clear that this type of policy only functions to hide problems with the company from prospective customers.

I'd be amazed if that would be enforceable in the UK. Unfortunately, they're relying on the fact that you'd need to spend a fortune taking them to court.

Absolutely outrageous, but on the upside it has blown up the company's face: that kind of bad publicity is going to cost them way more than $3.5K - would you ever do business with them after reading that report? I definitely wouldn't.
