Default email app deleting messages from server

I had the default email app set to not delete messages from the server when I deleted them in the app, but it did so anyway inconsistently. This morning I had three emails, read them and deleted each. It deleted two of the three.

I have installed K9 Mail and done some testing and will stick with it.

The default app appears to have become buggy under 4.4.

No, you jad it set to not delete them from the server when you read them in the app. POP3 doesn't have a "delete from app but not from server" protocol, so you can't do that.

If you're using a corporate email server, the email administrator may have had something set up to do what you were doing, but he's going to have to make changes to accommodate Android 4.4.

This is not a corporate email server, it is a standard POP3 server. The default email app was working fine prior to 4.4. If I read the message on my N7 and then hit the delete button, the app no longer 'saw' the message but my laptop still did and was able to download it. The stock email app on my phone (on 2.3.4) has worked fine for years.

After I installed K9 Mail I ran several tests. I read messages in K9 and then hit the delete button. K9 no longer 'saw' the messages but my laptop still did. Apparently I am able to do what you did not think was possible.

Messages being removed from the server has nothing to do with deletion on POP - it happens the instant the client checks for new mail. When you delete an email afterward, there isn't really any mechanism to try to push that deletion back up to the server.

Look for some kind of "leave messages on server" option in the client. Usually POP clients default to something like "remove them from the server if I'm checking and the message is still on there and older than 1 week."

If you're using IMAP or Activesync, all of the above is no longer true though.

Perhaps I'm not being clear enough.

I run Thunderbird on my laptop. When I do a Get Mail in Thunderbird (I have it set to NEVER check automatically) it downloads the message/s to my laptop Inbox and they are no longer on my POP3 server.

If I have not yet downloaded them with Thunderbird, I can view them on my phone or on my N7. If I don't touch the Delete menu entry or the Delete icon as the case may be, I can go back and view them again on my phone or N7. If I DO touch the Delete entry/icon on my phone or N7, the message disappears from the Inbox on THAT device, but it is still on the server. If I refresh the Inbox on THAT device it is empty. If I then to a Get Mail with Thunderbird on my laptop, the message is downloaded and disappears from the server for all devices.

What was happening with the default email client on my N7 is that if I viewed the message and touched the delete icon the message disappeared from the server. If I then did a Get Mail with Thunderbird there was no message to download.

The default email client on my phone (running 2.x) never had that problem, nor does K9 Mail on my N7.

I understand what you guys are saying and I do understand how mail works. Perhaps I should have mentioned that my career was in IT and I know very well how to setup and run test cases and troubleshoot problems.

I only posted this thread to alert other users who might be experiencing this problem and not understanding what was happening. Incidentally, my wife also has an N7 and she was experiencing the same problem.
