how do you hard reset the hero?

Power Down - Hold the end call buttom down until you get a pop up window to power down.

When powering back up, hold both the end call button AND the home buttons at the same time. It'll bring your Hero to a funky screen and no matter what you do (that I have found) after that point, it will restore your device to like new.

On a similar question, if I hard reset,what happens to apps I have downloaded - specifically those I have paid for? Do I have to pay again? I assume a hard reset will wipe them off the phone, but maybe I am wrong. For the $1 apps, not so big a deal. For the $30 Docs to Go, bigger deal. I realize I could ask them but thought I would see if anybody here knew the answer.

The apps you pay for are tied to your gmail account, so no, you wouldnt have to pay for them again. Just download them again and you should be straight.

And yes, they would be wiped.

you can also go to menu -> settings -> security -> factory data reset
