Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

I thought recovery was supposed to stop OTA? My G2 just got the update message.
Nope recovery doesn't, I just got the OTA notice too.

There's some key thing that is supposed to stop it from doing the update. I need to root and ROM now because this is going to get annoying.

What G2 ROMs are people running? Any really, really stable ones?

Are you still on 4.2.2? Voodoo Rootkeeper is supposed to work but doesn't support 4.3.

Yup still on 4.2.2 - just going to ROM this thing sooner rather than later.

I didn't mean root though, I already did that the day I got the phone.

You had to go and say that. LOL

Just looking out for you.

I gave that advice last year, some went to another forum to argue about what an idiot I am. Several months later, they were back here getting my help and singing the blues that they wished they'd listened.

SuperSU Pro goes for the same thing but warns you to not trust it.

All that either can do is attempt protection of the /system partition.

When an OTA comes in and updates the bootloader to close exploits, that's another story and you'll be left holding the bag.

Early, aren't there some files you can freeze or rename in Root Explorer to stop OTA's? I seem to remember something I renamed to .bak, but I can't remember what it was. .

When you can, it's often manufacturer specific and sometimes varies by generation for each manufacturer.

I've done it.

More convenient to go with a rom that's already turned that noise off though. If unavailable your favorite rom dev would probably get a kick out of adding that mod just on general principles.

I just tried to ROM but recovery got stuck on wiping cache. So I'm putting it off for now and when the message comes up again I'll keep declining.

I don't know if it'll work but next time it comes up try long pressing for app info and clear data. Got rid of my update nag in the notification bar. Also don't know if it's a difference between T-Mo and VZW

My wife looked at me like I lost my marbles when I said just keep declining it when it comes up. LOL

I'll have to look for a way to "fix" it for her.

Happy wife, happy life and all ;-)

One thing was hard to learn, wiping cache with either TWRP or CWM takes forever with my G2. Give it time and let it do its thing. :)

Got this flyer today. And we have one of our own to thank for the deals.

He's a good sport too :D

Ok.

Here's the thing - Google has significantly broken important things in the built-in WebKit in Android, beginning with 4.4.

Things like pinch zoom and a lot more. Like text flow - yes, that's right - text flow, and that's insanely basic ok.

I urge everyone to log in to your Google+ account, go here, and click the star near the upper left.

Let Google know that you don't want to lose old features just because they're being capricious.

They're trying to move people to the Chrome browser. That pig, even if you love it, is broken, lacking features and incapable of rendering every web page properly.

And that's exactly why we install more apps and often more than one browser.

But outside of Chrome and Firefox (another pig), all other browsers rely on the built-in WebKit for everything.

It's an important issue, please tell your friends.
