Staying up late vs. Waking up early to Study

What do you believe to be a better approach to studying habits? I have a test tomorrow morning and am wondering what would be the better approach to studying for the exam. (I did study earlier this weekend so I didn't "cram" everything for today). Would staying up late studying be more beneficial to remembering the steps of chemistry because I sleep right after, but get less sleep, or would getting a full night of sleep (7-8 hours) then waking up completely and starting to study and having the recency effect take affect for the exam. The recency affect is being able to remember things you had recently studied.

I want to get into a regular habit for studying and want to know the best approach.

Well I would be able to sleep more soundly knowing I had got the work done, even if it were for less hours sleep it would be with relief. I might not be able to get a restful sleep knowing I hadn't done the studying.

But wouldn't you get the same amount of sleep anyway if you are going to get up early enough to do the work in the morning? If you get too much sleep you might wake up too late to get the work done.

If you're tired though, you may as well get some sleep now and wake up fresher than you are now and you will then work more effectively.

I was always a constant learner. If I didn't understand something, I would read and reread my notes and textbooks. I didn't /couldn't wait for an exam. That is what worked for me. You need to find what works for you.

Too late now, but a good option is to study the night before, then do a quick refresher if needed in the morning. :)

if you have studied enough before that night....
and you are thinking about .. refreshing your knowledge.

then go to sleep early... get full sleep.
wake up.. then study.

In my opinion, unless you are totally and utterly unprepared then sleep is far more beneficial than cramming all night.

My strategy was to make study notes, boiling down the entire syllabus for the exam onto roughly ten pages. That allowed me to get a full nights sleep, but still be able to go through the entire syllabus in the hours before the exam. Win win.

And stop posting on AF at 3am when you have work to do lol.

Yes. Thats one tip!

That may work. The test is not until Thursday because she moved it thankfully. I have 2 more days to study and I cab do it.

I found that if I studied before I slept..I would sort of "dream" about the material it seemed that I understood and retained it better that way. Actually, I think I remember reading a study or article a few years ago that confirmed the same thing.

It's always better to study a day or few days before the test have a good sleep and just do a quick review of the material before exam. It's a simple learning process things have to "sock" in. I remember myself learning poems when I was a kid. I tortured myself until my brain could not function and remember things. I was at the point that I would not repeat few lines of the poem the night before. Next day I could read it out loud without a single mistake. Your brain needs time to process information it receives, really stressing it out before exam is not going to do anything good.

Not that I want to, its always better to review days before. And reviewing a little bit every day, like an hour for 7 days a week ain't bad also. I kind of want to get into the habit of getting up early to do things. Whether that will be studying or going for a run when the weather gets better.

What is this studying of which you speak?

Seriously, I never studied for tests. I guess I retained what I learned without having to refresh the knowledge. I actually slept through Chemistry everyday and aced the final exam with a 94.

I can't do that. Chemistry is a struggle for me and I need to apply my time to learn the subject. Wish I could learn like you.

That's not a bad thing, in the long term. Natural ability only gets you so far in any given situation, after which you need to know how to study.

I believe in scheduling your time better. For me I like to wake up early, get my stuff done, and have free time throughout the rest of the day if possible.

That's what I want too. Just to have everything done.
Maybe I should spend more time at school. Would have Thursday but had a giant migrane.
