Questions from a Rookie about a Nexus 5

1. Sounds like you put yourself in recovery mode. Probably were holding the down volume while pushing the power button, which I believe is how you get there. You don't want that for anything you are doing.

Thanks

1b: you can move app shortcuts by holding them down and dragging them.

There are two places you talk about here. One is the app drawer, which is accessed by tapping the icon with the six dots. This is where all the icons or all the apps installed on your device show up. If you hold one down and drag, it should appear hovering over your home screen. The home screen is your desktop, and if it fills up with icons, you can create additional desk tops by dragging an icon to the right (or it will do it automatically if you try to place to many icons on the first one).

You can delete icons by doing a hold and release (a menu should pop up) or by dragging the icon (if I remember right-- I'm now using a different launcher) to an X that will appear at the top when you drag the icon.

2. I'm not sure enough about what you are referring to, sorry.

3. There are probably apps that will make it more one-step. Try searching the Play Store for "power off button app"

Hope this helps.

I held down the app and a REMOVE function showed up in the google line above it. But when I release the app the remove function disappears and if I try to hold the app with one hand and tap the remove function with the other hand nothing happens .

Any suggestions ?

New problem.......

I downloaded the FB app.

It would not accept my password.

When I tried to log in, it had my preset gmail address and I deleted it and typed in my FB username.

When I typed in my password for FB it came back and said that it was incorrect.

So, I changed my FB password with my laptop (it is quicker and less irritating).....more room. ....

So, I returned to my phone and it says that I can still not log in with my new password....

I tried pushing the GO button at the bottom and the Log In function at the top.

Neither worked.

Any ideas ?

Try dragging the app icon up to the remove icon. Should turn red when they overlap. This should remove it.

A few times I have had the phone in my hand and all of a sudden it says....

article saved........or something similar......

what am i touching to save something or is it automatic ?

where does it get saved and how can i delete it ?

tia....

is there a benefit to rooting this phone ?

i am not a technophobe and i don't use it for anything other than general use.

Unless you have something that you want to do that isn't allowed under non-root, I'd say rooting isn't worth it for you. It doesn't appear you do, so I'd say no. I used to be a huge rooting evangelist but at this point I only do it if I'm already installing a custom ROM, and I don't even feel the need to do that anymore. Android has just gotten that good.

What are you doing when this happens? are you in a particular app?

how come when i rotate the phone to see the content better, some sites don't rotate ?

is it the website, or is it a setting on the phone ?

ok, i figured out that i am hitting an icon in the bottom left corner. and that is when it saves.

but i have been to downloads and gallery but i don't see anything there. where the heck is it going and how do i delete it ?

--------------

also, when i have an outgoing call.........how can i add the name of the person i called ? right now it has the phone number in 2 boxes, but i want to add their name at the top and delete the phone number leaving the number below it. how do i do that ? I have clicked everything and tapped everything else.......no magic solutions.

First you should make sure you have it set to rotate system-wide (settings>display>auto-rotate screen). If that is set, then your screen should be free to rotate at will. However, apps do have the ability to lock in a particular rotation (games, for example, and some launchers) so if a particular app isn't rotating, then my guess would be that it is that app.

My guess is that the cnbc app has a saved articles section where you can save articles for later consumption. If you go to the main page of the app you should be able to find it. If not, I will download the app and take a look a little later

one more question.........

i have a bunch of phone calls and i wanted to delete most of them but not all.

I went to the dot icon in the upper right and it said delete and when I tried to delete them, I had to delete the whole page.

How can I delete just selected phone numbers ?

--------------

I got my phone on 14 Feb and it came with a new number. I bet I have had 50 phone calls for someone named Reyes most of them from a finance company saying you have 4 days to respond etc...........

I thought that they had to wait 6 months or so before a number was reissued ? I guess I was wrong.

tap on the number to delete>it will open a new page with details of that particular number>tap the three dots on top right>tap remove from call log.

tap on the outgoing number>in the new page tap the people+ icon and go from there. to replace to top box of number with a name tap it.

I double checked my settings and they were on auto rotate like you suggested. I guess some of them just don't rotate like you said....

I wish it was otherwise. Some times its better to turn it sideways and read it horizontally.

Thanks for everyone's help today.

Hopefully, others will see the thread and perhaps some of their own questions will be answered.

But I have one more......lol...

I keep getting calls intended for the owner that had this phone number last.

Lots of phone calls that hang up when the ringing stops, lots of voice mail from bill collectors.....2,3 particularly.

I signed up for the do not call list but it is not effective for 31 days.

Even so, that is only for spammers etc.........

I tried looking on line to determine how to block phone calls but the lines I found don't apply to N5.

Is there a way to block specific numbers on the N5 ?

Without having to buy an app for it ?

thanks, i missed this earlier. if you are on cnbc and you tap the bottom left of an article it gets saved . i guess i hit it by mistake.

if you go to the main menu in the upper left corner it takes you to a menu and you can delete articles. they list the articles. you check the box and then check delete.

i kept searching the phone, i never thought to search the app.

thanks again.

:D

Not what you want exactly, but it's the best I can think of right now

1. Save the numbers that are calling and annoying you, go to the people app, select annoying contact, then tap the three dots in the corner, then select all calls to voicemail.

and 2. Tell the bill collectors to **** off, you are not who they are after.

Although this sort of thing is a crap shoot, if it is as high a volume as you imply and this is a new number for you, ask to have it changed.

I had a number that was one digit off from a Chinese takeout. I would get calls day and night. I changed it. Now I get calls about every six months looking for some woman who must have kited some rather large forged checks because they haven't written it off in four years. I get the call every six months because that's about when it gets handed to a new agency without the information that she won't be found at my number. They are very polite once they realize she's not there. I tell them to let me know when they catch her. It's kind of fun. ;):p

I get a lot of phone calls where they call, it enters voice mail , no message is left and then they hang up.

I wonder if it is a robo call ?

I am going to assume that it is because I recently got the number.

If it continues after 30 days, I will consider changing the number

Maybe the old owner......so and so Reyes will get a new phone and call everyone and inform them of the new number and they will stop calling.

Last Friday I had a phone call from the elementary school saying Josiah was not feeling well , please pick him up.........lol.

Maybe it is just a matter of letting everyone know they have a new number.....

I will see what happens.

Meanwhile, I 'll see if I can find an app that blocks numbers...:)

I know it may go against your principles ( I don't usually answer my phone if I don't recognize the number) but if you answer and it's a human right away, telling them they have the wrong number will probably go a long way towards them not calling any more

that does not always work if I am working and my phone is off or i turn the phone back on and i have 5 messages .

not everyone keeps a cell phone tethered to their ear all day long.

When I cut my phone on, I get the time and date etc....

If I don't flip the screen real quick it goes into a sleep mode .

It only lasts 3 seconds before I lose the screen and have to push the on button to bring it up again.

How can I make it last longer before I have to refresh it ?
