Help Wi-Fi turning on automatically?

enjikari

Newbie
Greetings everyone!

Welp. Have succumbed to my first "I can't fix it on my own" issue with my S4. For the past few days, my wi-fi just turns itself on all by itself. I'll randomly check my phone for something and see that wi-fi is engaged. I personally haven't used wi-fi in months. I've searched other forums and videos and google'd myself silly, and I can't find a fix. A note: I'd rather not utilize an app killer unless it's absolutely the last resort. I'd like to hope there's some cleverly hidden option I'm just not finding. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Yup, one of the WiFi problems I have repeatedly whined about. Not only does my WiFi turn itself on, when I have purposely switched it off, but it turns itself off right after I have connected to some WiFi connections.:(

How long have you had this issue? Because for me it's only been recently. Like, past few days recently.

Figure out which app is found that:

1-is there an app that you installed just before this started happening?

2-Use this permission manager.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.permission
Under device, some items have listed 'modtify settings" permission (this means it can toggle wifi). It also tells when the permission was last used. The next time wifi goes on....go to permission manager and find the app that accessed the permission most most recently...that's your culprit. You can uninstall it...or if you want you can turn off the modify settings permission using the permission manager program

I assume you checked to make sure that Settings>Wi-Fi>Auto connect is not checked? I turned wi-fi off the other day since I wanted to test the 4G connection with Speedtest, and noticed that it had turned itself back on when the app started. Turned out "Auto connect" was engaged (probably by default).

Thanks for the replies so far! Here goes:

I assume you mean Settings > Connections Tab > Wi-Fi? There is no "Auto Connect" option there. So, if there is a Wi-Fi auto-connect option, I don't know where it is

Nope. However a couple of apps were updated. Is there a way to view all apps that have been recently updated, by when updated?

Is this anything like a task killer? I'm always wary of those types of apps. Is this a safe/reliable app? I imagine it is, or no one would rightfully suggest it, but just wanna make sure.

Right, I should have said Settings>Connections>Wi-Fi>Auto connect (second option, right under "Notify me." Having said that, I note that you have not mentioned what version of Android you've got, nor your carrier. Of course, that could change your options as well as where they might be. I'm using 4.3 (MK2) on Verizon. If you're on something else, I guess I can't help you. BTW I also have an option under Wi-Fi (menu key >Advanced)>Auto network switch that you may or may not have that also looks possibly relevant.

Good luck.

See, my "Settings > Connections Tab > Wi-Fi" is simply a toggle on/off for my Wi-Fi. There is nothing shown unless I toggle the Wi-Fi ON. When I do, all that comes up are the selectable networks that are available. No "options" of any sort (except to Add Wi-Fi Network). If I press the lower-left button, I can select an Advanced selection, which have some options. But nothing about "Auto Connect".

I am on a Samsung Galaxy S4, model number SCH-R970X. My carrier is C-Spire.

No, it's not a task killer. As long as you don't adjust anything in the program it simply allows you to view which apps have which permissions and when those permissions were last used, without changing or altering the operation of your phone in any way.

It does ALLOW (not require) you to deny certain permissions to certain apps if you chose to do so. Doing that may create a small risk of that app malfunctioning. But also gives you power to limit what apps can do. It is interesting to browse and see what apps are using what permissions... gives you an idea of what they're doing. If you think an app is being unnecessarily invasive (wallpaper checking your location), you can cut off that permission.

As I recall, the permissions requested by the app itself are very benign. Take a look at them when you install the program.
