Official EVO Rumors and Speculation thread

I was planning on trying out Steinheil/SGP but someone just posted that they aren't planning a product for the Evo which is really disappointing to me. Thanks to whomever contacted them I can't recall since it was a few pages back.

I must have missed that post, but I am really disappointed to hear that. I emailed them asking if they were planning on making a screen protector for the EVO. Maybe other people interested in this screen protector should do the same. I will post what they say in response to my email.

Lol another link from that Ozcar thing. If you're not aware, that site isn't very reliable. But is anyone else concerned a little with the camera? If you've seen video taken with the Incredible it looks decent but not amazing. I plan on doing a lot of recording and I'm hoping that the evo with it's 720p resolution can blow me away.

You know....I've been convinced this is the phone for me....but if I had to pick one thing that concerns me it is the size. With this said, the cost of the plans, the features and the WiMax capability all make for a compelling recommendation of this phone. I guess the good thing is....while the size may indeed have disadvantages....it will also have great advantages for viewing....so which is more important? Each person will have to decide. Now if this phone were a bit smaller...say closer in size to the Incredible....now that might be the best of all compromises. I guess we'll see...once these hit the stores. Which brings me to a question...can I reserve a phone....via a pre-order....then go in and still have the option not to buy? I don't envision this happening...but just curious?

hey, size matters! Actually, just go play with an HD2 this weekend and get that concern dealt with now. I did it a month ago and it made me want the phone even more. my GF was shocked at how thin and light her new Incredible is. The Evo is barely heavier and about as skinny. wider is easier to type and gorgeous size for browsing, etc. She will be jealous when she sees my Evo.

i am a premier customer. if i order or pre order online through sprint, will i get the evo shipped to my house on release day?

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on the quality of the Incredible's camera as well. As far as quality goes when it comes time to get our EVOs, I hate to be a downer, but I wouldn't EXPECT it. The problem with these cameras is that while the sensors that they use to take pictures are continuously improving, the small lenses are the real bottlenecks since they let less light in.

I think what we're going to see (as is already the case with the Incredible) is that the EVO's camera will compete with some lower-end point and shoots, but you're not going to want to use it as your primary camera.

I'm VERY interested in the HD video. The question has already been asked, but I certainly hope that when HTC says it does HD video, it's talking about full-on, 30fps 720p. I think it'll work, because at the very least you could set the camera to encode in a lightly compressed format (less processor needed => more resources for the camera to use to get more FPS in).

Regardless, it's still awesome to me. I've always kind of wanted a camcorder just to have one, but then I ask what I would shoot and I always come up blank. This is PERFECT because it's in your pocket all the time, and it's HD to boot.

Stoked.

Clock, a while back you posted about screen protectors. I know there are two opposing camps on screen protection, but You and I have the same idea and viewpoints when it comes to screens it seems. I was just curious what your experience is with them, and if you recommend any specific types or brands? (please no Zagg comments from the peanut gallery)

Sorry I missed your post there, Pyro.

Honestly, I usually just hit up Amazon and look for decent reviews from the same company. I just always get two or three of them, because I inevitably screw the first one up by getting a fingerprint on it or not laying it down perfectly. It's a tricky process, but once you get it, you're golden for the rest of the life of the phone.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the highest quality, here. It's basically just a piece of plastic that fits over the phone, so there's not too much to screw up! That said, I still try to take a quick look at Amazon reviews to see if anything is available.

where did you see a sample hd video from the incredible? I googled and looked on YouTube, but only found SD samples, no HD. I too am interested in seeing how the video looks.

Unless you consider 480p to be HD, it would be impossible to find "HD" samples from the Incredible, it doesn't record 720p.

I really like Gekko's suggestion for those who have concerns about the EVO's size as far as going into a store and playing with the HD2. I was pleasantly surprised how thin it really is compared to my Pre AND how its not that much bigger than my iPod touch. Honestly I can understand that most people are concerned with the true portability of the EVO, but don't you guys remember these:

Or even THESE?

So in perspective, with all its capabilities, you are carrying around a camera, videocam, video player, radio, phone, PDA all in one device :)

For those worried about size, of course it is up to each individual to decide what is too big (or too small) for you. However, as a woman with pretty small hands, I did not find the HD2 to seem too large. It fit very nicely in my hand and the screen size is fantastic. :D

Also, haven't heard anything in a while about the color. Jackson or Self Praise or anyone else in the know, do you know if the old rumors are correct that the Evo will come in both black and white?

Thanks Eguy, I'm on here pretty much all day, every day; you'd think I would know. But there's so much said every day that it's easy (for me anyway) to get lost! :p

I had a chance to play with an HD2 earlier this week at a T-Mobile store and with an Incredible today at the Verizon store. Honestly, to me, after seeing the HD2, there's no going back in screen size. The Incredible was a really nice phone, but it just felt way too small and cramped. It especially feels too narrow. The colors and contrast on the AMOLED are amazing though.

But, I'm just throwing in another opinion that the EVO screen size and form factor are just about right. If anything, I was suprised by just how small, thin, and light the HD2's form factor is... and if the EVO's just going to be a little thicker and heavier... then I'm going to be totally happy.

Also, I've been reading a lot of posts here about the EVO's 8mp camera and 720p recording capabilities. Those expecting results as good as an average consumer p&s digicam will be very disappointed. And there's no way the quality is even going to compare with shots from a consumer 6mp DSLR from almost a decade ago. At the end of the day, it's less about raw megapixel count and more about sensor size--the size of the light-collecting pixels on the sensor. Small sensors can only collect so much light. Think about each pixel as a bucket in the rain. If a bucket (photosite) has a large circumference, it will be able to collect more raindrops (light) in any given amount of time (better low-light performance). PLUS, it won't overfill as quickly (blown-out highlights in the photos). So, while the EVO should have a camera on par with the best phone cameras out there, please temper your expectations so you won't be too disappointed when you actually receive the phone. Until a revolutionary new photosensor technology is invented, we're just limited by the laws of physics.

Everything I wrote above should also apply to video performance. In addition, however, video needs to be compressed and faces bandwidth and memory limitations. So, again, 720p from an EVO will not look as good as 720p even from specialized consumer hd camcorders, which have larger sensors and specialized hardware DACs and DSPs. While both videocams might have the same nominal 720p resolution, the EVO will have lower dynamic range and higher compression artifacts (macro-blocking, rougher transitions, etc).

However, with all that being said, check out the following 720p footage from an early version of the upcoming Nokia N8. If the EVO can achieve anywhere close to this kind of quality... we should all be pleased: Nokia N8 sample video on Vimeo

How about an off topic EVO thread to keep the junk out of here?
That is one of the ideas as mentioned in my big post above. But I am not sure that will be helpful either. What should be Ideal is if one has a funny video, or any comment that really is off topic then post it in its own thread in the EVO section.
The same goes for any important info, if you have any info that you feel contributes to anything EVO and its release, specs etc, feel free to post it but also notify billsmed so he can update the first post where all the facts and specs are outlined. This way the first post is always up to date.

Thanks, TS. I agree with your comments and appreciate you as our moderator. My take on this whole thing is that this thread is too big and at times it wonders quite a bit, but it's still a good thread with a lot of good people contributing. That being said, I can still see this thread being closed in the next few weeks after the phone is released, just like they did in the Incredible forum today.

Over the weekend, I suggested we make a "tips and tricks" thread when it gets a little closer to release time. I see they just that in the Incredible forum a couple of days ago. I would like to see such a tread started ahead of time, with tips you can use prior to getting the phone. Then, after everyone starts getting the phone, we can expound on other subjects that deal with using the phone to get maximum benefit from it. I don't think it's too early to start thinking about it right now and I'm open to suggestions for topics you'd like to see covered.

Bill
Thanks bill, like I said in my big post, much like Phandroid and its articles, any thread that outlines a phone that is about to be released is or should be set up with a first post where all the info is kept. And post thereafter is the discussion of the first article.

yes this thread will be closed that much is certain. It should be, especially after the phone is released. There won't be no point in keeping it open at that point. Thereafter, any posts of the EVO would be made either in their own threads or in existing threads in the section.

A tips and tricks section is a good idea, but with this type of phone, I envision it would probably be more of a subsection(s) where Rooting, Tricks, Tips etc will go in much like whats done in the Motorola Droid section and its subsections. Don't know if starting a thread about it now would help being that the phone isn't here yet, but hey if it helps, go for it.

As for this..
How about a recap of daily noteworthy news? Is something like this possible?
I won't quote the whole quote (just click on the arrow in the quote), but I like the idea, but thats alot of work.

Who manages the Incredible thread? It's like 20 times larger than this one.
LMAO, at the moment, no one. lol For some reason, a few days ago (almost a week) no mods can see that thread. Its like the Gods were listening. lol Seriously, there was and still is a bug I think that will not allow the mods and the owner of the site to see anything in that thread except the last page of the day. Only admins and guides can see it. So basically its on its own. maybe due to its big size. But it doesn't matter, its closed now I believe since the phone has come out.
And thats one of the concerns with this thread, no one wants to see this get so big that the database an't handle it, Sure if the posts can't be seen okay we can deal with it, but that first page where all the info is in and up to date would be a shame to lose that. And that why I take it upon myself to remove any off topic stuff daily so it doesn't bloat up like Godzilla eating Mothra.

to say that the Samsung Galaxy S over the EVO 4g is legit sounds kinda crazy for me...plus in LA on tmobile HSDPA I'm sure it will be just as fast from what Noah said about it in Vegas. Damn the wait is killing me I'm gonna have to look at the Samsung and Evo videos again.

depends on what kind of jeans you wear -

1. hipster skinny jeans
2. hip hop baggy jeans
3. 80's stonewashed jeans
4. other

Yea I guess that can result to some conflict. But unless your jeans are really tight then I don't think anybody will have a problem. Your average pair I believe will do just fine.

I think it would be more of a problem for guys that wear skinny jeans. I'm pretty sure most, not all, but most females carry their phones in their purse or something other then their jeans.

In the end we all will have our EVO and be happy.

...However, as a woman with pretty small hands, I did not find the HD2 to seem too large...

For me, it's just a matter of how easy it is to carry in my front pants pockets.

Women carry purses, which makes it no problem and I'm not about to carry around a Murse (Man Purse, for those of you that aren't familiar with the lingo)...LOL.

Isn't the Galaxy S coming out on all the carriers?

That guy is always switching up . I wonder what he is going to say once the EVO is out. Everyone has their own opinion though. Just don't let what other people say or think decide for you. I personally think people are loving the Galaxy because of the screen. It does have nice specs though. I think what takes away from my personal like is the texture of design and the Whiz OS. Yea it's Android but I only like the stock and sense. But it is a nice phone overall.

If you love the Evo enough, you could rock a murse! Just sayin'! :p

But for real though, I see what you mean.

LOL...I love the EVO enough that I'd consider rocking a belt clip, but the murse will never, ever, ever show up on my accessories inventory!...hahaha

When I checked out the HD2, I seriously don't think it'll be an issue for dudes to keep in their fron pockets...well, unless a dude is wearin' skinny jeans (which I'm not a fan of at all).

I think that's what they're trying to do but, I don't believe it was confirmed. Be a nice selection piece if it was for carriers to provide for their customers.

Either way, EVO will be my next phone. Just wanted to throw it out there for peeps that were still on the fence.
